HISTORY-ONICS VOL. 18 NO. 3 JUNE 1999 THE NEWSLETTER OF THE WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY m / NAME THIS PLACE DESOLATION SOUND RE-DISCOVERY 2000 Come Adventuring With Us In the Wake of Capt. George Vancouver's StljpS/ "Discovery" and "Chatham" It is just over 200 years since HMS Discovery and Chatham, under the command of Cafitain George Vancouver, dropped anchor in Howe Sound. Captain Vancouver had served under Captain James Cook, the famous explorer for several years. Cook's influence clearly shows in the meticulous charts, maps and drawings which were the legacy these adventurous sailors left us and which are still used today. Our speaker, Raymond Crome, is an author and keen historian who joins in partnership with the renowned maritime artist John Horton in various works. John Horton is the proud owner of a converted Admiral's barge, first built and commissioned by the US Navy in Pearl Harbour for Admiral Nimitz in 1944! Now named "Artist's Life", the vessel is a well-known and welcome local fixture which frequently goes to the aid of sailors in distress. For many summers now these two friends, together with others who join the crew from time to time, all of them fascinated by the voyages of Capt. George Vancouver, have been following in the wake of the "Discovery" and "Chatham" to experience, write about and paint the landfalls as the sailors of 1792-94 would have seen them. No mean feat! JOHN M. HORTON Raymond Crome is in the process of re-writing Vancouver's log -detailed journals into language more easily understood by today's readers, and Horton is producing many meticulously detailed paintings. Their joint efforts will result in a book for both students and adults which will preserve and bring alive a part of our history as never before. Canada's history is exciting - many of us just do not realise it! For those of us who live by and love the sea this promises to be an evening to remember! NEXT GENERAL MEETING Will be held on Wednesday June 23rd 1999, at 7:00 pm in the Activity Room of the West Vancouver Seniors' Centre, 685-21st Street (parking off Fulton Avenue, between 21st and 22nd Streets) All Visitors are Weicome What's Inside: ’ ^ President's Report...._____â- ;. /. ^. 2 And This is the Way it Was 1. , l .
