They are looking for nominations or suggestions for buildings, trees, or landscapes that you feel have a particular heritage design or importance, such as: * a well preserved structure built before 1945, particularly if a 'notable' early resident is associated with the site * a well maintained, architecturally significant building built between 1945 - 1975 * a healthy, mature, and/or historically significant tree or landscape The Commission will review all nominations and suggestions, and will submit the recommended changes to the three heritage inventories to the Municipal Council.. To discuss the heritage inventory program, or to submit a site for consideration, please contact Joel Lawson, Assistant Planner, at 925-7236. Taping Personal Histories By: Susan J. Dirasser I live in the Cypress Park/Caulfeild area and have gained experience from taping histories of early residents - and found what a delightful place this must have been to grow up in. Other people have taped memories from some who held significant positions in the Municipality and who have taken part in the development of West Vancouver. There are a great variety of different experiences and backgrounds to listen to and record. It is especially interesting to hear of a way of life when the population of West Vancouver was much smaller. Then people lived in small clusters with stretches of uninhabited areas between so friends walked a lot to visit each other! If you are also a person who enjoys listening to tales of bygone times, then the idea of helping to record personal memories of early days in West Vancouver might interest you. There is a serious need to have more records of residents who grew up here in the 1920s, 1930s and before. Join us, and perhaps share your own memories, as well as those of family and friends. These records will give coming generations the opportunity to learn what our community was like in earlier days and will give them a much greater appreciation of all the work that has gone into making our community of West Vancouver the splendid place it is today. (Ed. note: Susan is a long-time member of the Society who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes in a variety of ways, only one of which has been the taping of memories of bygone eras. She would be delighted to discuss the oral history project with you if you are unable to make the project meetings.) Linda Tzang Asks: Does Susan Dirassar's article leave you curious? Intrigued? Talk to us! The Museum & Archives is looking for volunteers to work on a new oral history project. We want interested people to conduct interviews, transcribe tapes, and work as edi-tors/fact-checkers. Volunteer training and support will be provided by Museum staff. If you would like to be a part of this team, please join us at the Museum on TUesday, June 17 at 5:00 pm for a short organizing meeting to learn about the project and what it entails. If you cannot make it on Tuesday there is a follow-up meeting at the Museum on Wednesday, June 30 at 5:00 pm or call Linda at the Museum at 925-7297.
