ETTER OF THE WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOOETY RY-ONICS VOL. 16 NO. 5 NOVEMBER 1998 “7%^ Gold Hustlers †Klondike Author Reminisces PRESENTATION At our next general meeting, Lewis Green, geologist, author and history-buflf, will be our speaker at Vancouver Seniors’ Centre on November 25th, 1998, at 7 pm. Mr. Green spent 20 years with the department of Geological Surveys and was stationed in Whitehorse from 1962 - ‘66. He spent his summers exploring much of the Klondike hinterlands by foot, horse back, tent camp, and sometimes, by helicopter. His book. The Gold Hustlers, is a well researched journal describing the movers and shakers of the Klondike gold years. Because deposits were massive, much of the mining consisted of huge dredging and gravel moving operations. Mining on this scale required large investment which was only available if the “concessions†of land and water were assured by government. An Englishman, Mr Treadgold, his “concessions†in place, lured cautious investors by reaching into his pocket and rolling a handful of nuggets on the table at a critical time in negotiations! NEXT GENERAL MEETING Will be held on Wednesday, November 25th, 1998, at 7:00 pm in the Activity Room of the West Van. Seniors’ Centre, 685-21 st Street (parking off Fulton Avenue, between 21st & 22nd) Mr Green also describes the small scale placer miner as a displaced dirt farmer, independent, opinionated, hard working, often in debt to the bank, but happy to struggle on his claim because he was his own boss. Many worked through the long summer days hoping to find their own handful of nuggets, but often made so little they would have been better off* on welfare. To get the very best out of this subject, do visit the Museum’s fascinating Klondike display and talk to the miner who has taken up residence there. Then join, from a distance in space and time, the trials and tribulations of the thousands of people - both men and women - who succumbed to “gold fever.†Above Photo: “Canadian #2†sank in the Klondike River on Oct. 10, 1914, the day the Boyle-Yukon contingent left Dawson to fight in World War 1. * * it ^ * it What’s Inside: Gift Shop Christmas Sale...................2 Cabin Builders on Hollybum.................3 Christmas Party........................... 4 An Old Sea Dog Visits Meeting..............6 West Vancouver Florist.....................7 Welcome to the New Archivist...............8
