EXECUTIVE REPORT By: Helen Davies, President Tfie Internet and iHistoricaC ^esearcfi. Increasingly, as computers become more popular with the general public, people are turning to the Internet and World Wide Web (WWW) to do historical research. It can be a helpful addition to a researcher's "bag of tools," but it does demand researchers develop some new skills if they are to make the most effective use of this new technology. While doing my own research for my Ph.D thesis, I have found the Internet to be of great value. By using "e-mail", a term I am sure many of you are familiar with, I am able to correspond daily with colleagues w'ho share my research interests. This way I am sure to remain current with the latest research in my field, something that is a constant challenge in a profession that is typically solitary in nature. In addition to e-mail, I "subscribe" to a variety of scholarly discussion groups on the "Net". This allows me to communicate with people from all over the world, and is particularly helpful if I need assistance trying to locate a specific reference or perhaps want information on archival holdings. It can save hours or even days of searching, as there is usually someone "on-line" who can help answer my questions. Perhaps one of the most interesting applications of this new technology, however, is its use in the field of genealogy. The internet can be a wonderful time saving tool when researching your family history, but only if you have developed some basic "net" skills, otherwise it can be a very frustrating experience tn ing to "surf the web." In an effort to help educate people about how to make the best of the technology, the Museum & Archives is offering several courses this spring on how to use the internet to do historical research. The following is a list of the courses offered: Genealogy and Computers (Sat., April 25, 1:00-3:00pm) Introduction to the Internet & Historical Research (Thu., May 14, 7:00-9:00pm) Navigating the World Wide Web - Intermediate (Thu., May 28, 7:00-9:00pm) If you are interested in learning more about the Internet and historical research, consider registering in one of the above courses. Contact the Museum & Archives for more information, phone 925-7295.
