The ceremony recognizes outstanding contributions to local heritage by individuals, groups and organizations. Among the deserving recipients this year were four Society members. Director Mary Chapman received an award for her ongoing commitment to promote greater public appreciation and awareness of history in West Vancouver. Lifetime member, Heinz Berger, was honoured for the crucial role he played in preserving a Mulberry tree in Dundarave. The specimen, listed on the District's inventory of significant landscape resources, is considered a local landscape treasure. Corporate member. Chapman Land Surveying, was recognized for the firm's on-going commitment to and support of heritage initiatives in West Vancouver, as well as for their extensive collection of archival material, documenting the development of surveying in the community. New Society member, Karl Ricker, received an award for his work documenting, in great detail, the history of the cabins on Hollybum Ridge. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you for your demonstrated commitment to West Vancouver heritage! (For more details, see page 8 "Member Profiles.") ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The AGM Will be held on Wednesday, April 29, 1998 at 7pm in the Activity Room of the West Vancouver Seniors' Centre, 695- 21st Street (entrance to parking off Fulton Avenue, between 21st & 22nd). /fu FEATURE PRESENTATION i/UltanA ‘The Lions Gate Bridge: A History ’ Opened in November 1938, the Lions Gate Bridge was hailed as Canada's largest and most spectacular highway structure, it is again the subject of great public interest & debate. West Vancouver Geologist Jim Roddick will be the guest speaker at the April 29th meeting. An authority on the histor>' & construction of the Lions Gate Bridge and its geological impact on Stanley Park, Dr. Roddick will present his personal and professional views on the history and physical characteristics of the bridge. His illustrated presentation comes at a critical time when there is much controversy over the future of the 60 year-old structure. Members and guests can look fonvard to a topical and informative review of an issue of particular concern to all West Vancouver residents.
