Page 4 WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY February 1998 SOCIETY NEWS Current Affairs and News of General Interest to Members EDI TOR IA L COMMENT Two New Features for This Issue In the early 1980's Rupert Harrison, our Honouraiy Archivist, interviewed over 80 outstanding citizens of West Vancouver; a goodly number of these audio tapes were transcribed before computers. While attempting to bring these type written transcripts into the Archives computer we thought that we might provide candid cameos of these community leaders, substantially in their own words. The original transcripts form a valuable part of our Museum's Archives and are available for research in their entirety. J. Howard Fletcher was interviewed in February 1980 at the age of 90. Our excerpt from his interview, which appropriately appears on page 8, is limited to his theatre activities and regret-fiilly omits the balance of his interview which covers over half a century of community activity. The selection of Mr. Fletcher for our first experiment was by chance. Please comment. We have been searching for means to acknowledge our Corporate Members in a more memorable format than the list which appears on page 2. We intend a series of thumbnail sketches describing our Corporate Members, their historical interests and their heritage activities within our community. We have begun this series on page 7 of the this issue with our most senior member. Chapman Land Surveying Ltd.. SPECIAL EVENTS ACTIVITIES Laureen Jones • Director, Special Events Reflections on the Christmas Party The managers of the attractive lodge Spuraway never disappoint us. When we arrive, the Christmas tree is decorated and the lights aglow. The festoons, the ceiling decorations and the lighted fireplace all create a welcoming sight. Introducing herself, President Helen Davies took the time to thank each one involved with planning, assisting and working all evening to make the party a success. Some of our super helpers were unable to join the party (having other obligations) and though we missed them, we managed to keep the guests happy. Santa this year was Bob Tapp, filling in for Waring, and doing a fine job. Santa’s helper, Deborah, kept busy giving out tree presents, while we all watched to see what Santa brought. After the tree presents, Peter Hall asked President Helen to come forward to receive a gift of a gavel. No doubt she will find it useftil at our Board meetings. The Bar again became busy and the Punch and the goodies seemed to be disappearing. Then some of the guests gathered together to sing Christmas Carols. A very nice finale to a most enjoyable evening.
