June 1996 WESTVANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY Pages WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY 1995-96 ANNUAL REPORT DIRECTORS At the 1995 Annual General Meeting on March 23rd. fourteen directors were elected. Officers elected at the following meeting of the Executive Committee were: President, Ian Macdonald; Vice-President, Tom Taylor; Treasurer, Ian Louden; Secretary, Susan Dirasser. Nine Directors’ meetings were held in the 1995-96 term. FINANCIAL The Society operating account had a loss of $210 in 1995. With revenues and costs each in the five thousand range this loss does not warrant consideration of a dues increase. All costs continue to be controlled. The balance sheet is strong. Details are shown overleaf. GENERAL MEETINGS Our five general meetings featured excellent speakers and programs, thanks again to Jim McCarthy’s fine efforts. Waring Pentland has been videotaping the meetings and tapes are in our files. Thanks to Cathy Tocher for providing refreshments. NEWSLETTER Waring Pentland and his Newsletter team continue to put out an informative and interesting newsletter five times a year. Our current printer does an excellent job in reproducing photos from originals often in poor condition. Thanks largely to our Contributions Editor, Barbara Johnson, and the many members who have joined her by submitting contributions of their own, we have received many complimentary letters regarding articles about West Vancouver's past. MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES Many Society members continued their good work as volunteers â€" at the Gift Shop, the Archives, the Museum School Program and other special projects. The Society donated nearly three thousand dollars to the Museum and Archives. Items purchased include a FAX machine, a sound system for the Museum Gallery and a special filing cabinet for the Archives. In addition Corporate Member Crawford Laing donated steel shelving which otherwise would have cost approximately two thousand dollars. Our Society arranged a grant of fifty five hundred dollars from the North Shore Arts Commission to support the Museum School Program. SPECIAL EVENTS Laureen Jones again had a busy year in 1995. In June, 42 of us caught the Royal Hudson to Squamish. We were “royally†treated by BC Rail with a reserved car, very helpful hosts and hostesses on board and a tour of the Railway Museum near Squamish. Other events included Port day ’95, a display booth at the Rec. Centre on Community Day and a most enjoyable Christmas Party at Spuraway. ORAL HISTORIES Peter Hall is heading up this newly formed project group. Their mandate is to collect, tape and transcribe interviews with West Vancouver pioneers. On hand and being worked on are seventy seven interviews done by Rupert Harrison and twenty nine others done by Society members over the last few years. As oral histories are invaluable in recording a conununity’s history, the Oral History group are seeking out West Vancouver pioneers with a story to tell. HERITAGE FORESTERS Hugh Johnston’s “mountaineers†continued their work on Hollybum. A second self-guided interpretive walk was completed, excellent trail markers have been put in place by Parks & Rec. and the descriptive brochure and map, “Lawson Creek Forestry Heritage Walkâ€, has been published. The working highlight of the year was the westward extension of the “Crossover Trail†from Brothers Creek to the “Hollybum Fir†- one thousand metres of new trail which now connects the two historical walks on the mountain. MEMBERSHIP Society membership reached five hundred early in 1996. Growth has been steady in the last few years no doubt due to the interest in the Museum and Archives, the quality of our meeting speakers and History-onics. HERITAGE AWARD At the West Vancouver Heritage Reception, Febmary 24th, the Historical Society was given an Award of Merit plaque “...for their pivotal role in the preservation of Gertrude Lawson House, and its conversion for use as the West Vancouver Museum and Archivesâ€. This award honours those Society members who worked so hard during the 80’s and early 90’s to make Gertmde Lawson House what it is today.
