We want to extend a special thank you to Joan Skipper and Jeremy Dalton who were inspired by Barbara Johnson's column of last issue to submit memories of West Van past Their contributions appear on page 9. We were pleased also to receive a call from Jeannie Moss (nee Allan) who also has tales to tell and has promised them for a later issue. Just keep those contributions coming and remember, the more names and details the better. SPECIAL EVENTS ACTIVITIES COMMUNITY DAY, 1996 Community Day will be over by the time this Newsletter is printed. Unfortunately we will have gone to press before the parade has reached the Senior Activity Centre. So the report on the display and parade will have to wait for the September Newsletter. Hope you all were there and the weather was fine. MASONIC HALL 75TH ANNIVERSARY. At their request we were pleased to prepare 12 panels of West Vancouver’s history on loan for display at the Mason Hall for their 75th Anniversary. Jack Leyland has notified us that the display was very impressive and much appreciated. SUMMER TOUR OF BRITANNIA MINES As noted on Page 1, our summer outing this year will be a tour of the B.C. Museum at Britannia Beach on Friday, July 5. The cost is $6.50 per person. The tour is scheduled to start at 1:30 pm. Britannia Beach is about 30 minutes from Horseshoe Bay on the ‘Sea to Sky’ highway 99 towards Whistler; the entrance to the Mines is well marked as you reach Britannia. MUSEUM TOUR â€" Try to arrive a few minutes early. Upon arrival a tour guide will greet us. Remain in the parking lot until that time. Due to the industrial environment, comfortable walking shoes and a light jacket are recommended. The tour will take us through the Engineering Building which is now the Museum orientation/information centre and gift shop. After a brief video presentation. Mine Tour Guides will take us through the Mining House which offers 3 levels of displays and exhibits. Leaving the Museum we board the train for a tour of the mine tunnel. At 1200 feet down we watch a demonstration of old and new methods of drilling, blasting, mucking, slushing and rock stabilization, (phew!) Outside now, we will see the early diamond drills, then the Mill #3 concentrator â€" one of the last remaining gravity-feed concentrators in North America. We then view various workshops and are given verbal and signage interpretations that will explain the project.
