June 1997 WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY Pages President Helen Davies Introducing Helen Davies A Few Words From Your New President Hello. I am Helen Davies, and I am honoured to have been elected President of the Historical Society. I am delighted to have an opportunity to serve such a worthy organization, and I am looking forward to working with the board and the membership, as we celebrate and preserve the history of our community. I was raised in wvhs Kerrisdale, in Vancouver, and moved to West Vancouver with my husband in 1989. I have a BA in Honours History from UBC and I graduated from SFU in 1992 with a Master of Arts, majoring, of course, in history. I am currently working toward finishing my Ph.D in Canadian history. I was introduced to the work of the Historical Society through Past-Presidents Ian Macdonald and Peter Hall, who sat with me on the West Vancouver Heritage Advisory Commission. As a Commission member, I led several heritage walks through West Van neighbourhoods in conjunction with National Heritage Week and North Shore Heritage Weekend. While leading these walks, I developed a greater appreciation of our community’s local history and decided to become a member of the Society. This past year I served on the Board of Directors Executive as Secretary. Undertaking a little research of my own, I was amazed to learn that, founded in 1980 with an initial membership of sixty, the Society has grown to over 500 members! What a marvellous accomplishment. Perhaps the most significant achievement, however, was the opening of the Museum & Archives back in 1994, a memorable event that could not have been realized without the dedication and hard work of our members and of so many people in our community. This is proof of what we can accomplish when we believe wholeheartedly in the merit of a project. Recently, Historical Society members were called upon again, to declare their support for the Museum, as the Municipality considered the possibility of closing the Museum & Archives as one of several options in an effort to balance the budget. It was gratifying to see so many people WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEXT GENERAL MEETING WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25, 1997 at 7 pm At the Senior Activity Centre, 695 21st Street, West Van. I am happy to report that the community responded enthusiastically in support of keeping the Museum & Archives open! This declaration of continued community support is very encouraging. Our challenge for the future, however, is to ensure the facility continues to play an important role in our community. This vital cultural service, that so many West Vancouver residents worked so hard to establish, should be treasured and nurtured. I believe we have a responsibility to record and preserve the heritage of our community for future generations. I am thrilled to be working with a group of people who share my passion for history and are committed to increasing public awareness about our local heritage. I look forward to meeting more of you and expect to see many of you at the June 25 General Meeting at the Seniors Activity Centre.
