News from the Museum & Archives WEST VAN EXHIBITS GO TRAVELLING! Great Northern Cannery in Victoria, May I - June 19 If you are traveling to Victoria this spring, be sure to stop in at the Royal British Columbia Museum (the Provincial Museum) and see Great Northern: A Cannery Community. Our West Van exhibition has joined with collections, exhibits and programs from museums and galleries across the Province for the Royal’s summer feature A Showcase of Wonders: British Columbia's Heritage Fair. The summer showcase is divided into three different productions, and West Vancouver is delighted to be participating in the first section. May I - June 19. Hours will be 10:00am to 5:30pm daily. For information call toll free I -800-661 -54II. If you missed Cannery Days at the Gertrude Lawson House, this is a great chance to see it featured in our Provincial capital. The exhibit highlights the salmon canning history of BC focusing on West Vancouver's own Great Northern cannery, with a look at its history and the lives of the Japanese, First Nations, and European families who made up the cannery community. The support of the lenders to the exhibit, Great Northern Packing Ltd., and Fisheries & Oceans Canada - West Vancouver Laboratory, is gratefully acknowledged. Art & Architecture at the Architectural Institute of BC Art & Architecture, the exhibit culmination of three months exploration into aspects of art and heritage by students from Sentinel Secondary, will be on display at the Architectural Institute from mid-April to the end of May. Hours for the Institute are 8:30 - 5:00pm and it is located at 103-131 Water Street in Vancouver, 683-8588. Using the historic Gertrude Lawson House, students worked with artists/architects Carole Amston and Fred Hollingsworth to create drawings and watercolours that highlighted West Van heritage. This is a real treat for both the students, and the Museum to have their works and the Gertrude Lawson House so prominently displayed at the Institute. Drop by and have a look!
