Page 6 WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY May 1995 FEATURE PRESENTATION REPORT ^^Cheers for 75 Years^^â€"A Video Showing By: Waring Pentland The feature presentation at our March meeting was a showing of a video production entitled "Cheers for 75 Yearsâ€. It was produced locally to commemorate West Vancouver’s 75th Anniversary in 1987 with snapshots of the year round celebrations. Incidentally, our own program Director, Jim McCarthy, was Chairman of that West Vancouver 75th Anniversary Committee. Cheers for 75 Years is an excellent local video production that highlights in entertaining cameos the major events of a year long celebration of the Municipality’s 75th birthday. Interwoven with these festivities we see heritage West Vancouver developing through local archival photos, set against a view of it as it was in 1987, indeed ‘a Place of EXCELLENCE’. Beginning with a review of the scenic beauty of West Vancouver and the many opportunities to enjoy leisure in the community it pauses to commemorate the official dedication of the West Vancouver Coat of Arms at a ceremony that kicked off the year long celebrations. A panoramic aerial view of the full municipality provides an introduction to the many historic sites, scenic parks and social amenities that give West Vancouver its unique character. Point Atkinson’s Lighthouse Park, Sandy Cove, Gleneagles, our Senior’s Centre, the Memorial Library, all and many more appear in interesting cameo shots. Our history is not short changed as we see Heritage buildings as they once were and as they are now; Inglewood High, the Clachan Hotel, Dundarave Pier, Klee Wyck, St. Francis-in-the-Wood and many more. We follow our community development in picture, across the municipality from the British Properties and the Capilano Golf course to Whytecliff Park and the first underwater park in Canada; across time from our early ferry system and the PGE to the Federation Cup at Hollybum Country Club. The scenes change quickly and the flow is never laboured. It is difficult to think of oversights; even our Society’s displays are included. The celebrations occupy a generous share of the footage but the camera does focus on the people, the humour, the activity, with very little attention to formalities. All in all a pleasant 45 minutes. What really is impressive is the excellent work done in organizing this historic year long celebration. NEW PROJECT West Vancouver's Creeks and Streams The Historical Significance of West Vancouver Waterways By Gordy Knight, Project Leader Some time ago Hugh Johnston and the late George Smith began thinking about the historical significance of the creeks and streams in West Vancouver, specifically with respect to information accumulated as part of their forestry project. When George passed away last September Hugh, reluctant to see the project drop but unable to carry the project further because of other commitments, looked around for someone to take on the project. Hugh knew that I had many years background in drainage and hydraulics as a Civil Engineer and that I was a retired principal and a founder of Dayton and Knight, Consulting Engineers in West Vancouver. He had recognized my continuing interest in the historical aspects of West Vancouver’s creeks and streams and had little trouble in persuading me to continue what he and George had started. If you or any members of your family have any old photographs of the creeks or streams, anecdotes, origin of names, old maps or drawings or whatever, please give me a call, Gordon Knight, at 922-7358.1 would appreciate the opportunity to copy any such information for inclusion in our project. As this is an ambitious undertaking I am also looking for volunteers to help me with this interesting project. At this point it appears that help will be required mainly in collecting data and archival checking, some photography for a data base, editing anecdotes, and development of a plan for presentation to the public. There will probably be a few meetings for coordination and assignment and we hope to have a few field trips to view some of the historical sites as the project progresses. This may sound involved and arduous but such will not be the case. Rest assured that none of us will be working to tight deadlines and the process will be ongoing probably for a couple of years. If interested please join us and let’s have some fun doing it! And don’t forget your cameras. Brothers Creek WVHS
