March 1995 WESTVANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY Pages WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY 1994 ANNUAL REPORT Financial: Two items contributed to a small operating loss in 1994: Due to a membership drive in late 1993 many members paid their 1994 dues in 1993, thereby increasing 1993 revenue and decreasing that of 1994. The Newsletter had extra costs related to the changes in format and production. Neither of these matters will recur. Operating costs continue to be tightly controlled The balance sheet is strong. Details are continued overleaf. General Meetings: Our five General Meetings featured excellent speakers and programs, thanks again to Jim McCarthy’s fine efforts. Waring Pentland has been videotaping the meetings and tapes are in our file. Our thanks to Cathy Tocher for providing refreshments. Newsletter: Waring Pentland and his hard working newsletter team sent us five issues of History-onics in 1994. A change in printing production has greatly improved the quality of pictures and at the same time has lowered production costs significantly. Gertrude Lawson House: Canada Day July 1,1994 was without doubt the finest day in our Society’s history. That day, over sixteen hundred people attended the opening of the Museum and Archives. All members may be proud of the vital part played by our Society in creating this wonderful monument to West Vancouver’s history and culture. In December we presented Mayor Mark Sager with a cheque for $55,000. These were the funds from the Kay Meek Foundation used for the Museum furnishings. West Vancouver Museum and Archives: Nearly four thousand people visited the Museum in the six months since opening day and enjoyed the display “Visions of West Vancouver”. Notations in the visitor’s book were without exception warm and complimentary. Unfortunately the staff archivist resigned in September and full archival activities were “put on hold”. An Archivist will be in place March 1995. We contributed $5000 from a North Shore Arts Commission grant to further work on Museum educational programs for school children. Special Events: Two events stood out in 1994, the Canada Day ceremony mentioned earlier in this report and the September 18 dedication of Point Atkinson Lighthouse as a National Historic Site. Our Society created a beautiful engraved stone plaque put on site to commemorate the occasion. Thanks for this plaque go to Laureen Jones for her artistry and Peter Hall for his generous support. Other events included Port Day ’94, Community Day and a most enjoyable Christmas Party. Special Project: Hugh Johnston’s “Forest Area Reconnaissance Team’ continues it’s work on HoUybum Mountain. This group of retired forest industry people made 18 field trips in 1994. More logging artifacts and heritage sites have been located, trails have been improved and a kilometre of new trail created. A second map and brochure for hikers (and walkers) is forthcoming. Directors: At the March AGM members re-elected 13 of the previous board. At the April 19 board meeting no director stood for president. Ian Macdonald and Peter Finch were elected vice-presidents, Ian Loudon, treasurer and Norma Sissons, secretary. At a special meeting of the board on July 26 Ian Macdonald was elected president. October 18 the board elected Waring Pentland and Susan Dirassar directors; Susan as secretary, replacing Norma Sissons, who has moved to Vancouver Island. Including the special July 26 meeting the board met 10 times in 1994. Volunteers: With the opening of the Museum and the Gift Shop operated by the Society the number of Society members doing volunteer work greatly increased in 1994. We thank them aU for being so generous in giving their time and talents. A special thanks goes to Mary Chapman and her group of Archival volunteers for their patience and forbearance while the Archives were closed. February 24,1995. On behalf of the Board of Directors, Ian Macdonald, President.
