EXECUTIVE REPORTS By: Ian Macdonald, President HOLLYBURN MOUNTAIN YEILDS MORE OF ITS HISTORY Hugh Johnston and his intrepid forestry group have completed yet another year of clambering around Hollybum Mountain. We’re working our way west of the “shakes, shinglebolts and steampots†heritage walk area. With Bill McCraig and his Parks and Rec. forestry crew we have extended the Crossover Trail a kilometre west, over Lawson Creek, to the “Big Firâ€. This nine-foot diameter tree is a truly remarkable specimen. It’s almost the last living survivor of a stand of firs that began life on Hollybum over 1100 years ago! Maps and brochures of the new area will be produced later this year. An exciting find made this year was the remains of a small camp used by Japanese shinglebolters - perhaps in the 20’s or 30’s. Still on the groimd are a rock work bench and the collapsed remains of an iron cook-stove. A close look in a bushy area turned up a good size piece of a large ceramic wok and a further look towards a large cedar windfall revealed two largely intact rice bowls. (I suppose one could say the rice bowls were found between a wok and a hard place.) WHAT NOW FOR 1995? 1994 was a banner year for the West Van Historical Society. Years of work by Society members bore fruit on July 1 with the opening of the Museum and Archives at Gertrude Lawson House and in September we participated in the dedication of the Point Atkinson Lighthouse as a National Historic Site. Also many of our members are actively participating in projects or are regularly vohmteering at the Museum and Archives. With such a busy and productive year behind us, what now for 1995? We will, of course, carry on with current activities but Society directors have discussed such things as a renewed membership campaign, more emphasis on corporate memberships, more social functions and more historical projects (preferably group activities and most likely related to either the Museum or Archives). We’d appreciate your input into Society affairs. Have we missed something? Do you have an idea for a project idea tucked away upstairs? If so please do not hesitate to drop a line or contact any director. DIRECTOR CATHY TOCHER HURT IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENT Cathy Tocher was in an accident the week before oru* Christmas Party, wherein she was hit by a car (while walking in a crosswalk at 23rd and Marine Drive, West Van). She suffered a double fracture to her left leg and tom ligaments in her knee. She is now home, resting and has a very positive attitude, but will not be walking for a few weeks yet! We all wish you a speedy and complete recovery, Cathy. HAPPY NEW YEAR, ONE AND ALL! The Board of Directors and I sincerely wish that all Society Members, Volunteers and Museum & Archives StaH* have an active, healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.
