Paged News from the West Vancouver Museum & Archives January 1995 Some of you may be aware that the Lawson House was closed early for Christmas in order to repair some water leaks in the facility. Due to the difficulty of completing work of this nature during winter "monsoons", and over the holidays, the Museum & Archives facility is having to remain closed through the early part of January. Repair work should be finished mid-month, but please call first before visiting. We apologize for this delay, but look forward to having all our "water" problems resolved in time for reopening on the 17th of January! Museum School Programs Launched! by Sally Seguin, Education Project Coordinator Where is Navvy Jack Point? Who was Caulfeild? These questions and many others are being asked by teachers and students in District 45 schools. This past Fall, the West Vancouver Museum & Archives provided the answers! Following a successful start in programming in 1993, the West Vancouver Historical Society's 1994 North Shore Arts Assistance Grant helped the Museum develop School Programs that were offered to schools between Oct - Dec 1994. A group of hardworking Education Docentsâ€"Ida Vyse, Sylvia Mather, Polly Smith, and Effie Sutherland-donated many hours of their time to training, and presenting Docent Guided Programs. We'd like to welcome others into the Docent program. If you enjoy working with children and would like to share your enthusiasm for West Vancouver's history, please contact Deborah at 926-9254. Two additional grants are being sought to continue these outstanding programs into 1995. Docent Guided Programs (Offered at the Museum) - Discovery: Visions of West Vancouver, grades K - 3. Exploring the past using touchable objects, drawing and Discovery Sheet activities. This tour focuses on the Museum's current exhibit, "Visions of West Vancouver". - "The House that Gertrude Built', grades 5-7. An inves- tigation of one of West Vancouver's most important heritage buildings and the Museum's largest artifact, the Gertrude Lawson House. Museum Extension Kits (Teacher lead in the Classroom) - Early Days of West Vancouver, grades 4-6. This kit is designed to help students gain an under-standing of the history of the community, and the people and places that make up West Vancouver. - Building Our Community, grades 5-7. Through pho- tographs and activity cards students take a careful look at heritage structures in their community. - Forest Heritage of West Vancouver, grades 4-6. An in- troduction to the early history and uses of West Vancouver forests. Note: The Museum & Archives toould like to thank Sally for her dedicated work in setting up the school programs, and wish her great success as she begins studies at SFU in the Professional Teaching Program.
