A quote ft*om one Museum Volunteer, “A Dream Come True!†Please Contact Marguerite Cassetta at 922-3498 - Museum Gallery Guide Coordinator George Smith, 1910 -1994 With the recent passing of George Smith, West Vancouver not only lost a respected long time resident, but a major contributor to the recorded history of the community. George was bora in Greenspond, at Shoe Point on Newfoundland’s east Coast. He came to West Vancouver at an early age when his father, Captain Darius Smith, joined the Ferries in 1912. Their first home was a tent under a tree at the southwest comer of Marine and 19th., just over a block away from where he spent the last 28 years of his life. George, a stalwart supporter of the Historical Society from the very beginning, had a strong desire to see that the earliest history of his community was accurately reported. He was the driving force behind the research on Navvy Jack Thomas" and the "Logging of West Vancouver" by S.P.Moody and others - topics which the Society continues to develop. His prodigious memory of places, people and activities extended to the often overlooked details that are so important to research. His enthusiastic response to every query usually included a visit to the site. A man of broad experience, his eye and keen memory for the lay of the land was legendary. A field trip with him was not to be missed and usually ended with a late lunch and a discussion over a couple of good shots of Scotch to “clarify our notes.†His interest in recording the early logging history of our Community probably stemmed from early childhood as he watched the “Walking Dudley†pass his home, or as he and his mother picked berries along Moody’s old Bull Team Road. He was a logger, prospector, soldier and surveyor during his active life, a man of many interests - History, Geography, West Coast Indian Culture, Mining, Forestry, Fishing and Politics. He had a strong entrepreneurial spirit and tackled his many pursuits with enthusiasm and an enduring optimism throughout his life. Searching for that Special Gift?
