Archivist Christina Andrews has left West Vancouver for another archival position. We want to thank her for her effort and a job well done here. We wish her well in her new endeavour. Thanks Christina! ARCHIVES TEMPORARILY CLOSED Many of you will be aware that the Archives at Gertrude Lawson House closed temporarily on September 1,1994. This was triggered by the resignation of archivist Christina Andrews, effective August 31. Municipal staff made a decision that some rationalization of the role of the archives was required by them and that a four month closure would allow time to do this. We are assured that a new archivist will be in place by January 1995. For now the archives are not open to the public, however, Mary Chapman and her volunteers are holding the fort pending reopening in January. “NEED - A - RIDE?†Elsewhere on these pages you will see we have started a program to provide rides to our meetings at Cedardale Centre. Larry Coles and George Woolstone will arrange rides for those who need them. Don't hesitate to call Larry or George. They are your neighbours and fellow Society members and would like to enable everyone interested to attend the meetings. SOCIETY ELECTS TWO DIRECTORS At the October 18 Director's meeting two hard working members were elected to the Society Board. Waring Pentland is publisher of History-onics and has been the driving force behind the change to the new format since taking on the job. Susan Dirasser has been our “computer person†keeping membership lists up to date and organizing the envelope stuffing and mailing of History-onics. Welcome to both of you- we look forward to your further participation in Society affairs. GIFT SHOP CHRISTMAS SALE The Museum Gift Shop will be having a sale prior to Christmas (Nov. 22-26,1994). Have you thought about buying some of your cards and gifts there? There will be books, cards, pictures, and other items at reduced prices. By the way, have you noticed what the kids are wearing at school these days? An XL Museum and Archives T- Shirt might be just perfect for your favourite 12 year old. A LATE NEWS REPORT SOCIETY PRESIDENT FIRED ON AT POINT ATKINSON No, it didn’t happen on September 18,1994 at Point Atkinson during the National Historic Site dedication ceremony; the proceedings that day were quite proper and uneventful. It was during the summer of 1944, war time in West Vancouver, when the blast of military cannon split the quiet air of our community. Society President Ian Macdonald was a young teenager at the time and on a warm summer evening had been conscripted by West Bay beachcomber, Norman Forbes, to be deck hand on a trip to pick logs off the rocky shore of Passage Island. The trip was successful, a dozen or so logs were in tow and the return trip to West Bay promised to be slow and uneventful. The route took the chugging “Stewart F.â€past Point Atkinson. Ian was enjoying the trip, sitting astraddle the bow, legs hanging above the tiny bow waves as the small tug approached the point Continued on Page 7
