September 1994 WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY Page 7 The West Vancouver Museum Opens it’s Doors 1,500 Visitors Through the Galleries in Two and a Half Hours! By: Jacqueline ajssen Despite threatening skies, an enthusiastic crowd celebrated Canada Day in West Vancouver with the opening of the new West Vancouver Museum & Archives. All totalled, the opening weekend attendance was up over 1,800! Tired staff and volunteers were ecstatic with the turn out and warm comments and congratulations. Featuring the union of a traditional Coast Saiish ceremony by the Squamish Nation with Canada Day celebrations, guests and officials witnessed as the Nation blessed the historic Gertrude Lawson House. The Historical Society was presented with a well deserved Certificate of Appreciation by Mayor Mark Sager, and the sun shone as the crowd enjoyed a plethora of activities and events. With the Museum now open, work is under way to let the public know about the activities that await them. We have had visitors from as far away as New York, and ail seem to be touched by the exhibit and the community. In some ways, however, our big job has just begun. There are so many Gleneagles Scottish Dancers highlight opening opportunities and leads to follow up - so many ideas to pursue - so many groups to reach. Along those lines, the Museum and the Historical Society are organizing a “Programming Group†this fall to plan and carry out special events at the Museum & Archives. Do you have ideas for a tour, special program or a field trip? We need your help! The first meeting of the “Programming Group†will be September 28 at 2 pm. Everyone is welcome. If you haven’t already seen the current exhibit, "Visions of West Vancouver" please drop by, bring your family and friends and come and have a look. Remember, this is just the beginning - the magic has just begun! Official Ribbon Cutting; Hereditary Chief Lois Guss, Squamish Nation, Mayor Mark Sager and Jack Leyland, WVHS.
