Really good news for the Society was the election of Ian Macdonald as our President. With this, the slate of officers is now complete. Ian is a true ‘West Vannie’, being a native son. Following his education at Pauline Johnson and West Van High, Ian went on to a successful and respected career in the forest industry, Ian is a member of the Heritage Advisory Committee and has been active this past year in working with Hugh Johnston on our forest history and interpretive walks program. Below, Ian shares with us his views for the future. NORTH SHORE ARTS COMMISSION GRANT RECEIVED The North Shore Arts Commission has favoured us with another grant - this time for $5,000 - to further the schools program instituted last year. This program, which will be developed by the Museum for West Vancouver schools, is designed to acquaint students with community history and so to encourage a sense of ‘belonging’. PROJECTS Hugh Johnston and his crew have been busy doing field research locating potential trails for our next walking tour(s). Lots of sweat is going into this project which is being done in cooperation with the West Van Parks Department In the meantime, don’t forget to pick up a copy at the Museum of our first brochure Shakes, Shinglebolts & Steampots which is the Brothers Creek forest heritage walk. ARCHIVES OWNERSHIP VESTED IN THE MUNICIPALITY Since its inception the Historical Society has collected and held archival materials in trustfor the Municipality of West Vancouver. In order to formalize this arrangement so that ownership could not be challenged at some later date, the Society executed an agreement legally transferring their right and title in these documents, photographs, maps etc. to the Corporation of the District of West Vancouver. A FEW WORDS FROM YOUR NEW PRESIDENT As newly elected President of this Historical Society, the first thing I wish to do is compliment and congratulate all the members of the Society who worked so hard to create the West Vancouver Museum and Archives in Gertrude Lawson's house. As a relative newcomer to the Society (although a lifelong West Van resident) I was able to observe and take part in only a small way. I did, however, quickly come to understand that Society members initiated the project, nursed it through the political approval process, raised a huge amount of money and over a period of nearly five years provided the spirit, wisdom and just plain hard work to complete a monumental job. Congratulations to all of you who were involved. Now that the Museum and Archives are open the Society’s function there will change. We have undertaken to be the main community support group for them. Our energies can now be directed toward the continuing job of providing volunteers, helping to plan and mn group and community programmes and to assist in any way we can in making our Museum as community-involved and successful as it can be. On Page 7 Museum Curator Jacquie Gijssen tells us there is a need for more volunteers to be guides, docents and programme facilitators. My own experience in getting involved is that you meet a lot of nice people, it grows on you and you have fun Why not give it a try - it could happen to you! By: Ian Macdonald
