Atkinson Declared a National Historic Site’ Details To Be In September Newsletter National Historic Sites By: Anne Vernon As you may know. Point Atkinson Lighthouse is about to be declared a National Historic Site, due largely to the strenuous efforts of our own Don Graham. There will be an official Dedication Ceremony in September, attended by many local representatives and by interested MPs and officials from Ottawa. Perhaps a little infonnation on how National Historic Sites came into being would be of interest At the end of the last century a wave of strong nationalistic feeling arose in Quebec and moves were made there to protect historical forts and battlefields. However, the first naming of a National Site was made in 1917 - thatof Fort Anne in Nova Scotia. Many official bodies then became interested in preserving various sites throughout Canada and there were great differences of opinion as to what actually constituted a National Historic Site; therefore in 1919, the Federal Government created the Historic Sites and Monuments Board.
