Page 4 WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY May 1994 SOCIETY NEWS --------------------------------- Current Affairs and News of General Interest to Members EDITORIAL COMMENT SHAKES, SHINGLEBOLTS & STEAMPOTS In this issue of HISTORY-ONICS we wantto acknowledge the completion of another Society Project, the 1993 Gold Green Grant, West Vancouver Forest Heritage Project, Coordinated by our Vice President last year, Hugh Johnston. We intended a full page article to acquaint our members with project details which space limitations prevent. However, we can list some of the accomplishments. The Brother’s Creek Forestry Heritage Walk and the Walking Tour Brochure. Titled Shakes Shinglebolts &. Steampots, this brochure will be available at the Museum and is self explanatory. The Museum’s Forestry Heritage Exhibition which will form part of the Museum’s grand opening exhibition was developed with photographs and information acquired by this project An Education Kit was cooperatively developed by the project team and Museum, Titled Forest Heritage ofWestVancouver this Outreach Kit will be available this fall for School Programs. Asa result of this project we have an Inventory of forty heritage sites, a file of 368 heritage site photographs and reference files of research material gathered in this project We salute the dedicated efforts of so many project workers and apologize because we can not acknowledge them or their efforts at this time We will have more details in the November issue. SPECIAL EVENTS ACTIVITIES COMMUNITY DAY: SATURDAY, JUNE 4,1994 Our pictorial DISPLAY, open 11am to 5pm will be at the Seniors* Centre, West Vancouver Community Centre, in the Music Room as before. We will be showing Old West Vancouver, as it used to be, with emphasis on early settlers...their homes and their transportation problems. The PARADE starts at 9:45am. Our entry will be, as last year, B)o*on Briton, his 1911 Overland Heritage car, which he will be driving with his wife and as our guest, aformerMay Day Queen. After the Parade our guest will be at our display to greet old friends and former school chums. GRAND OPENING OF THE MUSEUM: ON CANADA DAY - FRIDAY JULY 1,1994 Cathy Matheson*s Canada Day Committee, which among others, includes Museum Curator Jacqueline Gijssen, and Society Directors Peter Finch and Laureen Jones, has been very busy planning, arranging, borrowing and building to make this event the great event it deserves to be. The Museum opens with guided tours through segments of the history of West Vancouver in a three dimensional presentation. For a detailed Program of Events see Page 5. The gift shop will carry interesting items representing West Vancouver themes..jnainly by local artisans. We look forward to a very good turnout of Society members and their families on this memorable day. The Museum will be open Saturday & Sunday, July 2 & 3. As well, there will be Museum Tours and Activities in the gardens at Gertrude Lawson House. For those not able to attend the Canada Day Ceremonies, please drop by to share in this special weekend of Festivities. To those Members who would like to participate... If you would like to spend some of your time helping out in any of the areas or activities taking place....we need extra volunteers and we would appreciate your assistance...so come and join the fun!!
