EXECUTIVE REPORTS By: Peter Hally Past President DIRECTORS & OFFICERS ELECTED At the AGM on March 24 the slate of Directors proposed by the Nominating Committee was elected by acclimation. Not offering themselves for re-election were long serving directors Jack Leyland and Tom Taylor. Both these men contributed much to the Historical Society during their tenure. Tom’s exceptionally fine work as chairman of the Membership Committee did much to increase our numbers to new heights. We will miss his generosity and kindliness - until he can get free enough to return! Of Jack Leyland’s contribution it is difficult to find enough words to describe. That he was the driving force behind the successful efforts to get the Gertmde Lawson House as a museum and archives is well known to us all. But it was his vision and leadership upon becoming President at a difficult time which created the circumstances which caused this to happen. Jack’s wise counsel will be missed at the Board table. At their April 19 meeting the Directors elected Peter Finch and Ian Macdonald as Vice Presidents; Norma Sissons as Secretary; and Ian Loudon as Treasurer. The position of President remains open at time of writing. From personal experience working with these people, I can say that they are excellent choices and that we are fortunate to have such capable persons take on these duties. OTHER NEWS FROM THE AGM After the busy agenda at the 1993 AGM, this year’s meeting was a positively quiet affair! The Directors elected are shown in the column to the left. Harvey Hill was again elected Auditor, and Rupert Harrison, West Van’s “Mr. History” was reappointed Honourary Archivist PROJECTS Just as Hugh Johnston was putting up his feet and savouring the completion of the Green Gold project after eight months of hard work, we received news that our grant application to the Outdoor Recreation Council of B.C. had been approved! This project, to be done in cooperation with the West Vancouver Parks Department is to research and designate additional forest heritage trails ‘up the hill’. We hope to be able to produce two more walking tour brochures to compliment the just (and finally!) released Shakes, Shinglebolts & Steampots - Brother’s Creek Forestry Heritage Walk. This handy and attractive brochure is designed for the independent exploration of such remnants of West Van’s past as the foundation of a 1912 mill boilerhouse and Shield’s Dam. You can get your copy at the Lawson House MUSEUIVI FURNISHINGS The museum furnishings are now being designed and constructed thanks to a generous grant from the Kay Meek Foundation. This donation is simply of enormous importance - without it I don’t see how the museum could open. We are all most appreciative of Mrs. Meek’s generosity and thoughtfulness. Director Ian Macdonald is acting as the Society’s representative on this project
