March 1994 WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICALSOCIETY Pages WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY 1993 ANNUAL REPORT The Society completed an active year, with increased membership, a surplus in the operating account and a busy program of activities. Financial: Dues revenue rose due to an increase in the number of members, and coupled with a reduction in certain expenses, enabled us to return to a surplus in the operating account. Newsletter costs rose coincident with the increase in members and a switch to outside reproduction. The balance sheet remained strong. Details are given overleaf. General Meetings: Our five General Meetings featured excellent speakers and events. Our appreciation is again due to Jim MacCarthy for arranging such an interesting program. Once again we are indebted to Barb and Hal Johnson for providing the refreshments particularly as they had four different kitchens to work in! Special Events: Laureen Jones headed up the special events program, arranging displays at Port Day and Community Day, providing materials for West Bay School’s 40th anniversary and the Masonic Lodge, and putting on a splendid Christmas Party. A new initiative was an entry in the Community Day parade featuring 1936 May Queen Norma (Minions) Hamilton riding in Byron Briton’s 1911 Overland antique car. Gertrude Lawson House: After four years of fund raising the final payment for the Lawson House renovations was made to Council in July by the Society and the Rotary Club of West Vancouver. This was a tremendous achievement - one of which we should all be proud. West Vancouver Museum and Archives: The Municipality committed funding for 1994 so that the Museum could finally open. Curator Jacquie Gijssen announced that the great day will be July 1. Many members participated in training sessions so as to be able to assist in the many tasks associated with opening and operating the Museum. We were also pleased that the Municipality engaged Christina Andrews as Archivist. The Society had put in a lot of work over many years in building the archival collection and the need for professional direction was acute. Our major financial contribution to the WVMA was the funding of a computer system. We provided $3400 from our own funds, and received a grant of $6600 from the West Vancouver Foundation to complete the package. Special Projects: We received a Green Gold grant for the purpose of researching and photographing forest heritage sites and producing a walking tour brochure. In conjuction with the WVMA and the West Van Parks department, Hugh Johnston organized a group of retired foresters and industry people who did the research. The photos will form part of an exhibit at the Museum. The brochure will be published in early 1994. We also received a grant from the North Shore Arts Commission to provide an educational program for school-age children. This work was carried out by member Sally Seguin working with Curator Jacquie Gijssen. Directors: At the March AGM members elected new directors Peter Finch, Donald Graham, Eleanor Hamilton, Ian Macdonald and Catherine Tocher. They joined ten continuing members. David Wilson, whose work for the Society has been so great, elected to not let his name stand again. We thank David for his wonderful service over the years. The Directors met eight times during the year. Volunteers: The Society functions and contributes to the life of West Vancouver only because so many of its members volunteer their time and expertise to its work. Our thanks are due to them aU for giving so freely of their services.
