Page 4 WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY March 1994 SOCIETY NEWS â€" Current Affairs and News of General Interest to Members EDITORIAL COMMENT 1994 A Banner Year for West Van History Seldom has the History of our community been so clearly the focus of interest. With the Museum set to open on Canada Day and with Point Atkinson Lighthouse to be declared a National Historic Site, there is a real ground swell building in the awareness of our short but interesting past That we should be seeing two such historic events occurring this year is no accident but the result of determined work by a large number of dedicated individuals and organizations. For the many of us interested in our past regardless of specific area, we take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks for all their efforts. What better way to show appreciation than to take part in the action. The Museum's need for trained Volunteer Docents will be critical to its success. The Society always needs more volunteers and members. Many are the History Projects that remain undone for want of active volunteers. The entire Newsletter staff urge you to join in the growing History Movement Help make this a Banner Year. Take part in an activity of your choice. Corrections to Note In our January Newsletter, page 8, we reprinted an article from the North Shore News by Eleanor Godley titled “Linking Past to Present on the North Shoreâ€, a review of a lecture delivered by Rupert Harrison at Elder College. Unfortunately this article included two items of misinformation. Francis Caulfeild did not die “in his new village†as stated but in England. However, a memorial service was held for him at St. Francis-in-the-Woods church at Caulfeild on March 18, 1934. Secondly, the owner of the GreatNorthem Cannery during the 40’s was said to be “Mr. Millardâ€. The gentleman’s name should have been “Mr. Millerd.†It is editorial policy to make every effort to ensure that all published articles are accurate. When errors do appear we like to hear about them and will publish corrections as required.
