March 1994 WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICALSOCIETY Pages News from the West Vancouver Museum & Archives FROM THE ARCHIVES Archivist Christina Andrews is pleased to announce the recent arrival of several important donations: W.C. Thompson’s autobiography and accompanying photographs: Mr. Thompson, brother-in-law to John Lawson, was one of the first pioneer settlers in West Vancouver. Donors: Peggy Etchell and Don Thompson The Goodwin Johnson Papers: Mr. Johnson was very active in logging on the North Shore. His papers contain many photographs and early surveying maps of West Vancouver. Donor Goodwin Johnson with a special thank you to Ian Macdonald 550 Students Pilot Museum Programs arly history, community architecture, the historic Gertmde Lawson House and forestry heritage are the subjects of four new school programs now underdevelopment at the West Vancouver Museum. With the assistance of the West Vancouver Historical Society, a North Shore Arts Assistance Grant and a Grant from the Green Gold Program the Museum has succeeded in developing and piloting these programs with over 550 grade 4 - grade 6 students. The first of what we hope will be many, these programs were developed in cooperation with West Vancouver School District Teachers. They provide opportunities for students and Teachers to focus on their community’s history while learning topics from the prescribed school curriculum. Three of the programs. Early Days of West Vancouver, Building Our Community tmd Forestry Heritage are offered as Education Kits which can be borrowed by Teachers for use in the classrooms. The George Smith Papers: Mr. Smith is a long-time resident of West Van and was an avid skier on Hollyburn Mountain. He was a construction worker on Lion’s Gate Bridge and a surveyor for various B.C. companies. Donor. Mr. Smith with a special thank you to Hugh Johnston The Lawson Family Papers: The Lawsons were some of the earliest settlers in West Vancouver. Mr. Lawson was the first postmaster, owner of the first real estate company, and first telephone agent. He started the first ferry service and was the second Reeve. Donor: PLxie WUson ARCfflVES IMPROVEMENTS CONTINUE The Archives will begin implementing a database system to access the collection this Spring. This will greatly improve subject access to the photographs and manuscript collections. In order to serve the public better the Archives announce a change in their hours of operation. The new hours appear below. Initial response to the pilot programs has been overwhelming, with Teachers anxiously awaiting the Museum opening and the opportunity to begin signing up for the school programs. V.
