Page 4 WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY January 1994 SOCIETY NEWS Current Affairs and News of General Interest to Members EDITORIAL COMMENT We Haven't Done This Before! Last issue we noted that Eldercollege, at Capilano College, as part of their North Shore Heritage Series had arranged for Rupert Harrison to speak on The Early Years in Caulfeild and the Cannery. We intended to report on this presentation, but were beaten to the punch by Eleanor Godley of the North Shore News. Eleanor had arranged with the North Shore News to cover the full series of six lectures to be given at Capilano College on the subject. Our North Shore Heritage; this is the third in the series. We could not improve on her review so we have obtained permission to reprint her article on page 8. Many of you may have already seen her column; we ask your forbearance. Our Newsletter reaches many members not receiving the North Shore News. We would like to acquaint them also with Eleanor's work. Eleanor Godley is a regular Contributing Writer to the Sunday issue of the North Shore News, generally with a Seniors orientation. She is interested in the history of the North Shore and hopefully will continue to write on the subject in future. SPECIAL EVENTS ACTIVITIES ^^^^embershi^Repor^^^^^ Unfortunately we are unable to provide a list of new members at this time as membership staff have been concentrating on processing the flood of membership renewals. At the end of last year the total membership was over 400. Each application that is received has to be checked to establish whether it is a renewal or a new membership. REFLECTIONS ON THE CHRISTMAS PARTY By: Laureen Jones - Director, Special Events It was a dark and stormy night.HOWEVER, some 55 stalwart members and Mends bundled up and faced the elements to attend our ’93 Christmas Party. Greeting guests at the door was President Peter Hall, who at the same time gave out tickets for the tree presents. Mary Chapman, Joan and I were alternately giving directions to the cloak room upstairs, the refreshment area, and of course the bar - which this year was in the den by the living room. Ian Loudon was kept busy selling bar tickets, while Allistair Duncan tended the bar (very ably) Eric Lashbrook assisting, Hugh Johnston was at the ready in his natty waiter outfit and Barb and Harold Johnson were setting out the coffee and refreshment tables. When the guests had settled comfortably, Hugh (switching hats to become M/C) introduced Mel Oughton who entertained us with Christmas songs....and on hearing Santa’s “HO, HO, HOâ€, switched to “Here Comes Santa Clausâ€as Santa descended the staircase with his bag of gifts. (We found out later that Santa was no other than Newsletter publisher Waring Pentland) Approaching the Christmas tree, Santa opened his bag of presents to suddenly free half a dozen coloured balloons, which quickly floated to the ceiling! It seems that Santa’s helper, Cathy Tocher, had already placed the presents under the tree. After the drawing and the opening of the tree presents, which proved to be a fun time, Peter Hall was presented with a special gift....(which tied in with a story by Jack Mounce at the last meeting) involving a tea pot and a small bottle of Scotch!! Enjoy, Peter! Pianist Mel then returned to the piano and singer Tom Meglaughlin favoured us with several solos and led us in singing a medley of Christmas Carols. We all joined in with “We Wish You a Merry Christmas†to round out a most enjoyable evening. VERY SINCERE THANK YOU’s are in order to all the above mentioned participants...for their interest and their time in conMbuting to a great party. Thank you also Eleanor Hamilton for taking care of the rental of glasses, Norma Sissons, and Cathy Tocher who was Santa’s helper as well as very busy serving. Thanks also to Joan Skipper for managing the accommodation with Spuraway Gardens as well as assisting with the decorations. Thank you to all and to all a very HAPPY NEW YEAR.
