Normally the hard working volunteers of the Historical Society take a summer break. This year, however, many have kept busy as the Society moves into its expanded role as a support organization for the West Vancouver Museum & Archives. Two grant applications came through, a third one was applied for, the computer equipment for the Archives was delivered ^d we 'burned the mortgage' on the Gertrude Lawson House! Yes, finally all the money we committed to raise to pay for the renovations of the Lawson House was paid to the municipality on July 19th when Jack Leyland, Hugh Johnston and Peter Hall presented Mayor Sager with a cheque for $2007 and Rhino Rhors of the Rotary Club of West Vancouver handed over $18,000. These cheques marked the culmination of over four years of fund raising - an achievement unparalleled in the life of our commimity. Our sincere thanks go to all those who worked so hard to bring this wonderful facility to a reality. Many members will remember the meetings when George Smith and Hugh Johnston presented the story of logging and milling in West Vancouver. With this impressive backgroimd of material and bearing in mind the growing public interest in the forest lands ‘up the hill’, we applied for and received a Green Gold Grant so the history of logging could be made generally available and understandable. This grant will be used to photograph heritage sites, to produce a walking-tour brochure, and provide the material for an exhibit in the Museum. We are doing this work in conjunction with Jacqueline Gijssen and the Parks and Recreation Dept Hugh Johnston is managing a band of retired foresters working on behalf of our Society. We also received a grant from the North Shore Arts Commission which will be used to take West Van’s history into the North Shore Schools. This project builds on the work that member Sally Sequin (a curator in her own right) prepared for West Van schools last year. Again this will be a cooperative effort with the Museum. We have under taken as a Society to assist with the computerization of the West Vancouver Museum and Archives. To this end we have applied to the West Vancouver Foundation for a grant to assist us complete the project. Both the membership Committee and the Newsletter Committee have been busy processing new members and preparing this Newsletter . Tom Taylor, Joan Skipper, and Laureen Jones have been doing an exemplary job onmembership, while Anne Vernon, Waring Pentiand, andPat Wallace have been busy putting together their second issue of History-Onics. We received some very welcome news in mid August with the announcement that the Municipality had increased the time of Christina Andrews, the Archivist, to two full days a week. This is a doubling of professional archivist time, and promises a busy time ahead for the archives volunteers. Our next General Meeting - as you will have noticed- is at the Presbyterian Church at 29th. and Marine Drive. The Church room is nicely laid out, has a handy kitchen, and we can go with the more convenient starting time of 7:30 PM as we do not have to rush. This will be a test rim to see how well it works.
