May 1993 WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY Page 4 SOCIETY NEWS â€" Current Affairs and News of General Interst to Members EDITORIAL COMMENT A TIME OF CHANGE Membership Report This is indeed a ‘dme of change’ for our Society. As we see the Museum and Archives in the process of finally opening, and as our name reverts to the original ‘West Vancouver Historical Society’ we also face a change in the publication crew of the Newsletter. It is with a great deal of concern that your new team picks up the traces of what appears to be a heavy load. The past 34 issues of History-onics have been largely the work of Georgie Wilson and her husband David and we salute her unique style of publication that has so adequately satisfied the interests of our members. We will have difficulty attaining her high standards of communication. One major challenge will be our lack of personal experience with the affairs of the Society. While several of us have been members of the Society for quite a fewyears, none of the editorial contingent have been active at the Director level and, in the short term, may have difficulty reflecting the true aims and interests of the Society. Keep this in mind and be patient in making your final judgements. We are fortunate in that Georgje has, with great consideration, left us with a detailed and comprehensive outline of her Newsletter Procedures. We intend to adhere to her format as closely as possible in the hope that we can maintain to a degree the wide interest she has developed for History-onics. However there will be differences because of the new team approach and the new methods of publication. We hope that we can expand our present small team of volunteers to the point where the publication does not depend on the personal attention of any one or two people. T owards this end we have tentatively organized on the following basis. Anne Vernon, a relatively new member, has agreed to perform the functions of Managing Editor which will include responsibility for directing the development and overall content of each issue as well as contributing reports. Pat Wallace, a long time member well respected in the past for her work in the newspaper field, has undertaken the task of Contributions Editor. She will assemble articles and contributions for upcoming issues, provide the team with some much needed editing expertise and take an active part in directing our efforts. Waring Pentland, an inactive member for some years, will undertake to put the publication together for printing. Waring has had some limited experience in publishing a newsletter and brings some questionable computer capability to the project. Susan Dirassar, assisted by her crew of Pam Dewdney, Topsy Nelson, PatMcGrady,Trixie Snelgrove, PatHudson, Katie Dickinson, Joan Skipper and Laureen Jones, will continue to print, collate and prepare the Newsletter for mailing. MEMBERSHIP UPDATE The flow of membership renewals has finally slowed to a trickle and as at April 30 our total is 409 This year the ‘fail to renew’ loss is less than the ten percent we have usually experienced in the past, probably because of the excitement associated with the imminent openingof Getrude Lawson House. We have had 26 new memberships since the end of the year and their names appear below in alphabetical order. This year we intend to send aspecial memory jogger to those who may have overlooked renewing as their continuing support is a particularly valuable asset to our Association in that membership dues are our main source of operating revenue. We send a special thanks to all our continuing members and a warm welcome to our 26 new members listed below. To anyone recognizing a long dme fffend in the list below and not knowing how to get in touch; give us a call at the office and we will give you their phone number so you may welcome them personally.
