May 1993 WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY Pages News from the West Vancouver Museum & Archives "Glad Ws here" Heritage Week 1993 "Glad it's here" commented one visitor at the Heritage Week sneak preview of the West Vancouver Museum & Archives. Although not officially open, over 300 visitors toured the Gertrude Lawson House facility during Heritage Week, February 15-19,1993. Visitors enjoyed a superb photo exhibit of West Vancouver's pre 1945 built heritage by local photographer Gordon Montgomery, and the hospitality of the talented and enthusiastic Gallery Docents. In the local schools over 450 school children participated in the Museum's first eduacation program - The Early Days of West Vancouver. Developed by Museum Volunteer, Sally Sequin, the kit was a huge success in Chartwell, Cauifeild, Westbay, Bowen Island, Irwin Park and Ridgeview Schools. Our thanks to the West Vancouver Historical Society for their support and the West Vancouver Heritage Advisory Committee who co-sponsored the event. Thanks also to the many enthusiastic volunteers who helped out and the following local merchants who donated materials to the event; Bean Around the World, Kerrisdale Cameras, Capers, Savory Island Pie Company, Growers Direct, Mr. Ron Woodall and The Downstairs Gallery. Archivist At Last! Finally, on March 29 a familiar face in a different role, appeared at the door of the Archives, Christina Andrews, known to many of us through her earlier work at the WV Archives, will be joining us every Monday and Wednesday morning. This is a temporary position, as we await news on the Municipal budget, however we are glad to have her aboard! Museum Voiunteers Ever wonder what happened to those prospective volunteers who signed up for the Introduction to Museums course? Fifteen adventurous souls have been meeting weekly exploring the ins and outs of museum work, not to mention Science World, the UBC Museum of Anthropology and the North Vancouver Museum. Exhibitions, history of museums, looking after collections, education programs and lots of socializing aare all part of the agenda to give voiunteers an understanding and a feeling for museums in the 1990's, and of course the West Vancouver Museum. Are you hoping to volunteer in the new Museum when it opens? If so, plan on attending the fall session of the Introduction to Museums in October and November 1993. Pictured at left are a number of the graduating Volunteers from the first West Vancouver Museum Volunteer training course. Several members of the class were unable to stay for the picture taking. Attendees at this first course were: Susan Dirassar, Peter Hall, Fran Hall, Anne Vernon, Norma Sissons, Marguerite Cassette, Waring Pentiand, Margery Andrews, Esther Roach, Gwynn Preece, Edith Hawirko, Evelyn Harper, Kaye Holmes, Jacquie McGregor and Trixie Snelgrove. Congratulations to all for a job well done!
