Page 2 PRESIDENTS REPORT 1992 was another year of progress for our Society. Membership increased substantially, we had excellent speakers and five vintage History-Onics from Georgie Wilson. We quickly settled into our new offices in the Gertrude Lawson House, saw it officially dedicated, and welcomed the new museum Curator. The year wound up with the annual Christmas Party attended by 48 members at Spuraway Lodge. Gertrude Lawson House Dedication: Following a 'members only' preview on June 14th, the Gertrude Lawson House was officially dedicated as the West Vancouver Museum and Archives at an afternoon gala on June 19th - the 100th anniversary of the birth of Gertrude Lawson. Over 500 persons attended the event which featured 'the calling of the clans' by piper Janet Miereu and a performance by the Gleneagles Country Dance Society. Following the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by Mrs. Gertrude Wilson and Mayor Sager, guests toured the House and enjoyed refreshments donated bt Murchies before the Scottish dancers performed the 'last ever' dance in Miss Lawson's home. We were particularly honoured to have present members of the Lawson family who so generously donated funds toward the restoration work. The Archives: 1992 saw us say 'bon voyage' to Laura Millar (Coles) who has been our guiding light in the archives, as she went to London, England to pursue her Phd. in*‘ Archival Studies. Christina Andrews was a great help, providing professional guidance during the year. Mary Chapman and her splendid crew kept things running at all times. During the year we receive a grant under the Community Archives Assistance Program to enable the preparation of a policy and procedures manual and to continue the photographic reference system development. Displays: Laureen Jones again headed up our displays program, with presentations at Woodward's Park Royal store in connection with the company's 100th Anniversary celebrations; a fine show at Community Day; and a presence at Port's Day in North Vancouver. In addition, special display boards were prepared for the Lawson House dedication. General Meetings: Our five General Meetings featured four excellent speakers. Our thanks are due to Jim MacCarthy for arranging these events. I would like to say a special thank you to Barb and Hal Johnson for providing the refreshments without which our 'social hour' after each meeting would just not be the same. Curator: The Municipality engaged Ms. Jacqueline Gijssen as the Museum Curator in September, marking an important step in achieving the goal of a unique West Vancouver institution. We are pleased that such an outstanding candidate was selected. Volunteers: Again in 1992 our volunteers performed the hundrerds of tasks that make our Society function. Their dedicated work - in the archives, the office, out in the community, at the General Meetings, on the Executive Committee, at special events, all given with entusiasm is very much appreciated. These people simply make it all happen. Financial: The Executive confirmed a policy of funding ordinary operations of the Society solely from annual dues. Any funds received as donations are credited to the capital account and are used exclusively to retire our obligation for the restoration of the Lawson House, and for capital and special projects associated with the Museum and Archives. The Kay Meek Foundation grant for Lawson House furnishings is retained in a separate trust account. Copies of the financial statement for 1992 will be available at
