Page 3 For the benefit of our many members who live beyond the pale and who would not otherwise see the fine tribute paid our organization in the July 10th, 1992 issue of North Shore News, it is with enormous pride that we reprint the following from "News Viewpoint". Dream delivered ONCE IN a while, a local success story conies along that deserves more than just a passing mention. Such is the case with the West Vancouver Museum and Historical Society. Thanks to the brave efforts of this group of volunteers, West Vancouver has its first-ever archives and is about to open its first museum. In a time when arts and culture aren’t foremost on people’s minds or government agendas, success didn’t come easy. But after 12 years of scrimping and saving, the group miraculously came up with close to half a million dollars for the project through membership dues, flea markets, garage sales, private donations and other imaginative fundraising efforts. The dream “took a lot of selling,’’ according to some members â€" not to men- tion letter-writing campaigns to municipal hall and countless hours preparing submissions to secure Gertrude Lawson House, where the new archives is already operating. As one member noted, “district hail didn’t think we were capable of doing it, but we showed them that we were workers and not just people sitting around on our thumbs.’’ In time, the society hopes to attract a wide range of users. Among other things, it plans to develop a travelling kit that can be taken into local schools so young people can begin thinking more about their own history. Our hats should come off to this hardworking group of volunteers who had the courage and determination to see the project through. And now it gives us great pleasure to introduce our museum curator .... Jacqueline Louise Gijssen Bachelor of Arts (Arts History/Museum Studies) UBC 1985 Master of Arts in Museum Studies (in progress) John F. Kennedy University San Francisco, CA who comes to us with a ten year involvement with the museums in B.C. (eg Britannia Heritage Shipyard; City of Richmond; UBC Museum of Anthropology; South Pacific Pavilion - Expo *86) and with an accumulation of impressive awards. The engagement by the Municpality of Miss Gijssen is the penultimate step in the decade-long drive by the West Vancouver Museum and Historical Society to establish a community museum, an undertaking that will be completed when the museum opens its doors next year. The Society will be challenged to play a significant role supporting Jacqueline during the months ahead - a role which our members will find .....G L H, Gratifying, Laudable and Heartening.
