R.D. BREWIS, Manager In a previous issue of "Ridge Runner", the writer endeavoured to give a brief outline of the early days on Hollyburn, involved around the construction of Hollyburn Ski Camp and the formation of the Hollyburn Pacific Ski Club. The success of these ventures prompted others to take a look at the possibility of further similar developments on private property which at that time time was owned by a Mr. Edward Mahon, who had secured the acreage some years prior to the incorporation of West Vancouver as a District Municipality. The driving force behind this new venture was Mr. Ron D. Brewis, who commenced construction in 1932 of a log structure 40' x 38', located on the shore of West Lake. This lodge was the first large all-log building on the Ridge and had accommodation for about 20 overnight hikers and skiers as well as facilities for day visitors. "Hiker & Skier" magazine of April 1933 carried the above advertisement announcing the opening of West Lake Ski Camp for Easter 1933. The West Lake area also became the headquarters of operations for the Hollyburn Pacific Ski Club where most of their jumping tournaments were held on a new ski jump constructed by Ron Brewis. The Club also built a new club cabin near West Lake (the present "Burnabee" cabin) where over- night accommodation was provided for members. West Lake Ski Camp continued to expand u under the management of Mr. Brewis until 1939 at which time he sold the operation to Fred and Harry Jones. At this time, the District of West Vancouver was not fully hooked up to the Greater Vancouver Water Board and obtained some of their domestic water from the Brothers Creek system of which West Lake is a part. It then became necessary either to abandon the West Lake venture or to move to a location outside the Brothers Creek watershed. The Jones brothers opted to move to the present location of West Lake Lodge and all the buildings were dismantled and re-erected at this site. At the same time some further additions were made. The Hollyburn Pacific Ski Club also was required to move its Club cabin to its present location on the main trail to Hollyburn Lodge. Management and ownership of West Lake Lodge continued in the hands.of the Jones brothers from 1939 until about i950. During this period, the evolution of skiing was progressing rapidly from strictly cross-country touring to more emphasis on downhill.
