Page 8 NOT ONE SNAKE, BUT TWO Early in December, three photograph/postcards and the following note arrived in the mail. "These pictures came into my hands after the death of my sister who had lived on Radcliffe Avenue in the mid 30s. I was interested to learn that the gardens were located on Marine Drive and not near the Suspension Bridge. I appreciated talking with Jane Thompson earlier this year and now, after finding these cards again, I send them on to you - I don't want them returned to me. Sincerely, Greta Nettleton." The pictures Mrs. Nettleton is refer-ing to are scenes of the topiary snakes which once coiled their way through the old Capilano Gardens. We ran a picture of one of them in our March 1990 newsletter. Two of the new additions portray slightly different views of that picture. In one, there is a notable dissimilarity: the absence of 'our' two- storied house in the background. In its place is a low-lying, shed-like building. The second photo is a close-up not so much of the snake, although part of it is visible, but of a woman's figure and a rough-hewn cross barely discernible in our photo. The beseeching creature (long hair, long gown, long face) emerges from a pond, a pond which plays host to two, miniature islands. From one, the Stars & Stripes shoots upwards from a bed of pansies while the tri colore floats above the other. On the limb of a lifeless tree, a bird sits. It is both unearthly and unreal (Is this a pterodactyl I see before me?) for it is still perched in the same pose, on the same branch of the same lifeless tree after the completion of the two-storied house. The third photo, the one we have chosen to print (thank you Dave Swanson for supplying the halftone) is of a writhing reptile which comes to us already captioned 'The Mysterious Snake', distinguishing it from its neighbouring serpent, 'The Great Mystery'.
