Page 2 MAY 30th 1991 MEETING You must wake and call me early, call me early, mother dear; To-morrow 'ill be the happiest time of all the glad New Year, - Of all the glad New Year, mother, the maddest merriest day; For I'm to be Queen o' the May, mother, I'm to be Queen o' the May. Alfred Lord Tennyson Our May 30th meeting was not only graced by the presence of three of our A3 May Queens - Peggy Barker (1st); Dale Eriksen (5th) and Ruth Parnum (7th) - but a large number of participants from the heydays of May Days: Maids and Guards of Honour, Crown Bearers, Flower Girls, Chancellors and Pages, May Pole Dancers, members of the West Vancouver Boys Band and parade entrants. Fred Van Aggelen and Pat McCue came outfitted in the familiar cream flannels and blazers bedecked with the satin rosette and ribbon denoting members of the May Day Committee. The gift to the Society by Allix Duncan and Norman Deeming of a tape of the 1943 parade was all the more appreciated when the planned showing of a video interview (Olga Ruskin/Georgie Wilson) fell victim to Faulty Powers. The TV/VCR equipment had been tried and tested A-Okay immediately prior to the meeting but a loose antenna connection in the TV scuppered us, making the encore showing of the Duncan/Leeming production, the hit of the evening. David VJilson delivered a resume on the importance and impact of May Day on the community. At the mention of Pop Goes the Weasel, Rufty Tufty and Gathering Peasecods, voices could be heard humming the never-forgotten tunes, and clapping filled the room at the reminder of the 1944 defeat of the North Vancouver relay team, an accomplishment that had taken 13 years! For informiation for all but particularly researchers, our Archivist, Laura Coles, has compiled an invaluable 'finding aid' which lists the names of members of every entourage during May Day years. The meeting closed with the serving of refreshments .... thank you Hal and Barb Johnson. GERTRUDE LAWSON HOUSE PROJECT If you've passed by the corner of 17th and Esquimalt recently, you will have noticed the construction activity taking place at our new home and the future site of West Vancouver's Museum and Archives. We are pleased to report that the restoration and renovation work has reached the halfway point and we anticipate the project will be completed by late October. At the time of writing, the heating and ventilation ducting, electrical wiring and plumbing were completed and drywalling was under way. New windows are in place and the doors will soon follow. The exterior stonework is being repaired and the house has been reroofed in an attractive, grey pseudo-slating. This 'slate' product is manufactured in Belgium and closely resembles the real thing. This project commenced on July 18th, 1989, when Council approved our recommendation to develop the Gertrude Lawson House as a Municipal Museum and Archives. In our presentation to Council, we committed our Society "to support this project by participating with the Municipality on the planning, financing, imiple-mentation and operating of such a facility."
