' VOLUME 9 NUMBER 4 ^ OKY ' O W V. M & II S SEPTEMBER 1991 THE NEWSLETTER OF THE WEST V A N C 0 U V t'Râ€" MUSEUMAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY P.O. BOX 9 1 7 8 5, WEST V A N C 0 U V E R , B . C . V7V 4S 1 9 2 6 - 2 6 4 3 The letter dated July 12/83 was incomplete and so bore no signature and the return address, a street somewhere in Penticton, was as enlightening as an Agatha Christie clue. Even the salutation, "Dear Dr. Hill" wasn't particularly helpful. I didn't know any Dr. Hill - at least not then - and some time would pass before it dawned on me that the 'wrist' in "Sorry to hear your lady has broken her wrist" belonged to Eleanor Hill and that Eleanor 'belonged' to us as one of our Society's hardest-working, member volunteers. It was through Eleanor that I became acquainted with Dr. Hill and aware of his fascination with aviation and then, of course, the first paragraph of the letter made perfect sense. "Dear Dr. Hill: Many thanks for your lovely letter and the interesting article you have written about Frank, too bad he isn't here to read all the nice things you say about him. I will keep it in one of his books. I think you must have his "Canada Flying Heritage" if not, will send you one. You know more about Frank than I do, we always seemed to live so far apart & had totally different lives. Was interested in your account of Frank's 'chute jump. I once asked him if he was scared, he said 'yes, but by then it was too late'." Frank H. Ellis holding his pres-tigeous Strebig Memorial Trophy and a copy of his Canada Flying Heritage Photo Courtesy of Bas Collins The 'Frank' was, of course, aviation pioneer and long time member of the Municipal bus staff, Frank H. Ellis, and the letter-writer, his sister, Dora. The Society is privileged, indeed, to have Dr. Ted Hill address our September 26th General Meeting on the topic "Bus Driver - Extraordinaire". The meeting will be held at Cedardale Centre, commencing at 7:00 p.m. There will be a display of Ellis memorabilia from the private collection of Bas Collins. This will, un-doubtebly, be an evening of wide-spread interest so come early and don't hesitate to bring a guest along. As usual, refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the programme.
