Page 4 The California Connection by M. C. Chapman & G. Wilson The Workroom on Friday, April 26, 1991. The telephone rings at 11 a.m. and is answered by Mary Chapman. "Hello, my name is David Cobert and I'm calling from California. I'm researching a ship that used to sail out of Vancouver to the Arctic for the Hudson Bay Company. I've spoken to the H.B.C. but they have very little information available. I wonder if you can help me?" Mary: I'm not too familiar with any ships in connection with the the Hudson Bay Co. but I know of one, the "Bay Chimo" which sailed out of Vancouver for the Arctic. She was ice-bound on her last trip and the crew had to abandon ship and be flown out. I know this because a former neighbour of mine was a member of the crew. That would have been in the fall of 1931. David: Has somebody else phoned you about this already? Mary: No...ooo...oo David: Well, blow me down! How did you know that this was the ship I am trying to research? (Lots of laughing and joking about Mary's E.S.P. powers.) Mary: A few years ago I heard a couple of blurbs over the radio about a ghost ship that appears in the Arctic every once in a while and that the natives say the "Bay Chimo", though I'd put my money on it being an of it's the ghost iceberg. David: Well I'm just back from the Gulf War and while aboard ship I read an old Catholic magazine that had a story in it about the ghost ship "Bay Chimo" and that piqued my interest into pursuing it further. (More gasping and joking.) The conversation ended with an exchange of addresses, Vancouver Museum telephone number, and neighbours' name and address and a somewhat baffled Mary Chapman. Does she, or doesn't she ...have unusual powers? A follow up with the neighbours confirms that the "Bay Chimo" did, indeed, work for the Hudson Bay Co. as a supply ship outwardbound, returning loaded with furs. Saturday, April 27, 1991: David Cobert contacted the neighbours as well as the Vancouver Museum and Mr. Len McCann of the Maritime Museum has promised any available material. Meanwhile, the neighbours are turning their house inside out in search of memorabilia and some very interesting material is turning up. Stand by, me hearties, there may be a sequel to this saga. N.B. The gold, ladies wristwatch has been reunited with its relieved owner, Muriel Johncox. However, we have not been so successful regarding the bottle of wine left behind at the Christmas Party. Bottle will be returned to claimant upon correct identification of size, colour of contents, year, vinter's name, winery, country of origin, importer and bar code. (The bar code is that series of vertical lines and numbers and not what tells the bartender which drink to mix).
