• Page 3 PRESIDENT'S REPORT 1990 was again a very busy and successful year for the Society. Of particular significance is the progress we have made in our project to convert the Gertrude Lawson House into a Municipal Museum and Archives. We are pleased to report that the estimated funds needed to complete the restoration of the building have been raised and tenders have been called for construction to commence May 1, 1991. While this project is foremost in our minds, the day to day functions of our Society are of equal Importance. In the past year all of these activities have been carried out by our members in the usual capable and efficient manner. These volunteers worked a total of 6000 hours. Our membership is growing, and we can say with well earned pride that we are organized and performing well as an historical society. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all those members who participated so willingly, and are the reason we can all stand up and be counted. ^ ARCHIVES REPORT The Archives of the West Vancouver Museum and Historical Society had a busy year between April 1990 and March 1991. From April to December 1990, we received 66 separate donations of archival and museum material from donors in West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Victoria, and elsewhere. Between January and March 1991 we have received 36 separate donations, including photographs, documents, books, pamphlets, and scrapbooks. Some notable items include several new books, such as two new history books, one about the West Vancouver Memorial Library and one about North Vancouver, and many photographs of diverse subjects and places including Caulfeild School, the West Vancouver High School Ski Club, Hollyburn Theatre, Grouse Mountain, Ambleside, Dundarave, Horseshoe Bay, and many other areas of interest of West Vancouver. In 1990, we processed documents, scrapbooks, and photographs relating to schools in West Vancouver, and these are available for research. We also processed the archival records and photographs of May Day celebrations through the years, and these are regularly used for our displays and in the newsletter. We also processed the records of the Hollyburn Sailing Club, including administrative documents, reports, and photographs. In September we started processing the Rupert A. Harrison Collection of photographs and papers, including the records created by William J. Turnbull, G. S. Conway, Libby's Pharmacy, the West Vancouver Agricultural and Horticultural Association, and hundreds of negatives from the 1970s issues of the North Shore Citizen newspaper. As Mary has noted in her report, we have had many willing, able and fun volunteers join us in the workroom for a day, a week, or more -- some came for the afternoon and have stayed for a year! We always have room for more volunteers, so if anyone is interested in working with historical materials -- cataloguing, indexing, sorting, or just reminiscing -- please feel free to come in. No experience needed -- we provide on-the-job training! Laura M. Coles Archivist
