Page 3 CHRISTMAS PARTY - 1990 The 1990 Christmas Party held on December 6th was well attended and enjoyable. The auditorium at Cedardale Centre - which is really about the size of a large classroom, looked particularly festive with a small tree, several centre pieces for the tables and decorations provided by Don Youngson and Laureen Jones. We have to confess that we didn't get around to the 'readings' as promised in the November newsletter. Regrettably, no aspiring stage actors or orators came forward and the two Mutt & Jeff members of the executive, joed for the job, hung back and dallied until the arrival of the Rainbow Singers. The group quickly launched into a program of songs and carols with piano accompaniment. Interestingly, the sole male member of the vocal trio was Aubrey Shellard, retired West Vancouver bus driver and member of a pioneer family. We were pleased that some of the door prizes went to the Rainbow Singers. Eric Lashbrook, for the fourth straight year, acted as bartender in addition to arranging for the rental of glasses (and their return), obtaining the necessary licences and purchasing wine. Our fith year Medal for Meritorious Service may not, alas, be commissioned for presentation to Eric as the Provincial Government has come up with a new wrinkle regarding the serving of alcohol. Would-be bartenders are now required to take a three week correspondence course ($28.00, please) and make judgment calls on the sobriety of imbibers. In other words, "No more for you. Bud. You're cut off!" Christmas 1991 may see us serving cranberry juice. The Johnsons, Barbara and Hal, did their usual splendid job of serving refreshments and everyone brought great things to eat and nice things to fill our baskets for the West Vancouver Santa Claus Fund. To all those who contributed to the success of the evening - our sincere thanks. BRASS TOKEN When the Blue Buses extended operations beyond 29th Street to West Bay, the bus fare from the wharf at 14th Street to West Bay was 5c- Later, the fare was upped to lOq for those travelling into the 29th Street - West Bay zone. Passengers boarding the west bound bus paid the lOc fare and were issued a brass token as proof of one fare paid 'in full'. In theory the token was returned to the driver upon disembarking at 29th Street or further west, depending on who remembered it. The system was unpopular with both passengers and drivers and was only in effect for approximately six months - about the time the Upper Levels service started. The fares then went to lOq per ride and the brass token, like its featherweight cousin the shinplaster, fell into disuse. Hard to say how many of those brass tokens might still be kicking around in bureau drawers or tin cash boxes, but if you really want to see one - ask Bas Collins to show you his.
