August 6, 1990 Dear Folks: At this late date 1 have a copy of VOL. 8, #2 (March 1990) "History-onics" and in it (P. 6) is a picture of the "SNAKE" Norma (Minions) Hamilton sent, asking more re the crawly thing. I'll bet that Norma's Dad was Mr. Minions who had a store on N. side of Marine Dr. west of 14th near Normand's Grocery? Anyway - the "Snake" was on south side of Marine Drive, southwest corner of Marine Drive & McGowan Ave., Lower Capilano , N. Van. Marine Drive was 2 lanes & the snake was where cars travel on slow lane now, & the boulevard!!! The "Frenchman" or "Nap" was the owner, Napolean St. Pierre. He had a housekeeper who lived below and in the back, a Mrs. Benoit. The Snake was a beautiful creation. It was destroyed by a vandal but was restored once. There were some great stories over the doings in 20s & 30s at "Hell Fire Corner". I lived on Hope Rd then, a couple of blocks away - NO traffic THEN, No bridge even! So, that's it!! L. J. Macdonald (85 in JAN. NEXT!) Gabriola, B. C. Mr. Macdonald's recollection of Mr. Minions and his store is correct. According to Norma, the store was called the West Van Supply and was next door to the restaurant owned by Mrs. Neil Ross, Mr. Minions' mother-in-law. Normands Grocery & Confectionery was the adjacent building to the east and then came Geo. Hay's Real Estate office. Mrs. Ross started up "The Pantry" in one of the two stores her husband built at 1415 Marine Drive in the late 20s and early 30s. The next time you are in the Royal Bank at 17th Street, take a closer look at that blow-up photograph on the right hand wall as you enter. That's Mr. Minions leaving his store and heading for his flat deck truck. West Vancouver Museum and Historical Society: Kindly find enclosed $100 which we would like you to use in memory of C.T. Baldwin. It was our privilege to attend the 28 January 1988 presentation on CPR Princess ships which Charlie gave at your Pauline Johnson premises.
