FISHERIES RESEARCH LABORATORY AT CYPRESS PARK A ripple of disappointment ran through the audience at our September meeting when it was announced that eight of our members (plus two West Vancouver residents and a visitor from Scotland) had recently enjoyed a tour of the above facility. The Scot's back in porridge country by now but everyone else is welcome to get in on future tours. As luck would have it, your guide is none other than our own David Wilson and all you have to do is to try to organize a group of from 5 to 10 individuals and contact David at 988-1895. The tour takes about an hour and a half and entails standing and walking, mostly indoors but a short time is spent outside. It should be stressed that this is a research laboratory and not an aquarium. Topics covered include research into Salmon Production, Salmon Habitat and Biotechnology, Genetics and Nutrition. The most convenient time for a tour is on Tuesday mornings at 10. I think you'll get some appreciation as to how our tax dollars are spent. Incidentally, on the first tour, Laura Coles managed to reel one in - new member Suzanne Spohn who is on the fisheries staff. ONE MAN'S TRASH IS ANOTHER MAN'S TREASURE In this case, the 'man' is a woman and although I'm pretty sure she doesn't make a habit of foraging through the garbage, in this particular instance, it paid off. Mrs. Grayce E. Wallace rescued three, rather interesting silver cups from the dust bin (only in Park Royal Towers, you say?) and handed them over to us. Anyone know anything further about the following? A smallish cup, inscribed: "Sr. Contest Roller Jan 1st 1921 by G. S. Hockley"; a lopsided cup, inscribed: "Simmons & McBride Trophy Moose Picnic Tug-o-war contest"; and the tallest cup, inscribed: North West Moose Conference 1st Prize Parade Unit, July 5, 1941, Vancouver, B. C." The lesson here is that think of us before' you throw anything away. On the other hand, if it's trash - it's TRASH! WELCOME ABOARD Mrs. Eleanor B. Hill has volunteered to help out in the Work Room. Eleanor's been coming in on Friday mornings to give Mary Chapman a much needed hand. If you'd like to be of assistance, call 926-2643 to talk about it or leave your name and number on our answering machine and we'll get back to you.
