GENERAL MEETING - SEPTEMBER 27, 1990 "Indian History of the West Vancouver area Referring to Sites and Mythology" It's no small tribute to a speaker that when members of the audience have been exposed to the 18th century maps of the Spanish explorers and D^n Jose Maria Narvaez and references to the West Vancouver-Hollyburn Oil Company , those 70 plus in attendance not only saw their familiar community from an unfamiliar slant but enjoyed the experience. Guest speaker, Chris Arnett, opened our eyes to our own back yard in a laid-back, informal style that belied his grasp of his subject. We may well go on calling West Bay, West Bay rather than by its tongue-twisting Indian name but we're not likely to take for granted that landmarks and locations, as we know them, are original names. Acknowledging Major J. S. Matthews, late Vancouver City Archivist, as an excellent source of material, Chris studded his slide presentation with Indian events and lore, frequently using Indian names and language, and tantalizing us with references to a Cypress Creek settlement, middens and archeological digs. Thank you, Chris. The business part of the evening, which preceded the address, dealt primarily with a progress report on the Gertrude Lawson House; the fisheries' tour; and our future need for docents and lecturers, etc. With the serving of refreshments by Hal and Barb Johnson at the coffee urn and teapot, the all too short meeting came to a close. *An extensive article on the early Spanish explorations by Bernie Holt appeared in the February 1985 issue of History-onics. Similarly, a tongue-in-cheek article drawn from the Prospectus of the West Vancouver-Hollyburn Oil Company was featured in the September '87 newsletter under the title "Petroliferous". DMM I . -ST -Vi V . The Westerly Vol.l No. 2 IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED Chris Arnett 1973-74 We reached for the top, but ended up on the bottom. We should have won against that Burnaby North school, but we were just too smart for them. Many times I found myself hearing the question, knowing the answer yet thinking, "That can't be the answer its too simple". By that time one of the fellows on the other team said the correct answer with an overwhelming sense of seriousness bordering on the ridiculous. Ah well, at least we weren't programmed. However, it was all a great deal of fun and many thanks to Mr. Holt for being a courageous and sympathetic coach. I just hope my screen test pays off. See you in the movies. - C. Arnett - â- 2-
