Page 8 RESTORATION OF THE ROADWAY CAVALIERS There's a kid in our neighbourhood who's about to be loosed upon the melee known as "traffic" and there's no doubt in my mind, whatsoever, that he's ready for it having spent the whole summer tinkering with an unlicensed trail bike and using me for an occasional target. Judging from his resourcefulness, he's going to dovetail perfectly with today's speedsters, lane switchers, non-signalers and masters of the rude finger gesture. I was handed a 1931 Driver's Licence recently. It was issued to Muriel E. Brewis, Wadsley P.O. (West Bay) for a fee of $1.00. There's a couple of things noticeably different about No. 204545 and its 1990 sealed-in-plastic counterpart. To begin with, there's no Public Enemy No. 1 photo and there's no restriction definitions concerning corrective lenses or approved hearing aids, etc. The simple admonitions concerning safe driving ring with the cadence associated with the Ten Commandments. Some may find them reminiscent of a Judge Hardy "heart to heart" with son, Andy. One thing to think about .... were some of these rules heeded today, they could put ICBC into the same pigeonhole as the Maytag repairman and restore that much devalued currency - common sense - to the roadways of the nineties. Drive CAREFULLY and PRUDENTLY. You commit an offence when your driving endangers life or property, no matter what your speed may be. Over 20 m'iles per hour in cities, towns, and villages, and over 30 miles per hour in other places, puts the onus on you of proving yourself innocent of driving to the common danger. Keep an especial Lookout for Children. Keep to Extreme Right on Curves. Use extra Caution in entering or crossing Main Thoroughfares. Driver on your right has Right-of-way at Intersections. Make Driving Signals a matter of Habit. Signal about 30 yards before change of direction, and continue Signal till just before turning. Keep your Brakes in Order. Do it Now. Slack Brakes are Dangerous. Keep your Windshield clean. Keep your Lights in Order. All of them. Have them properly Focused. Use them at night.
