PAGE 3 CHRISTMAS PARTY - DECEMBER 7 th, 1989 Should you have had the temerity to ask any of the 55 people \dio attended the party - and for their pains were pelted with 21.3 mm of driving rain, "Was getting there half the fun?", you might just have had your ears boxed for Christmas! With the weatherman forecasting the probability of precipitation at 20 per cent - we wuz had! The BYOP (Bring Your Own Present) scheme worked very well, if perhaps a shade long (Any complaints or su^estions?) but I would have waited for two moons in the sky to catch Hal Johnson^ look of astonishment when his package revealed a leather whip! As for the disposition of the Darwinesque statue, tricky Dick Nixon could take lessons from the Coles. One smugly bold person decided to end the speculation by deliberately choosing an ape-shaped present and with an expression of impending martyrdom, proceeded to unfold a mammoth jar of mincemeat! The suspense went right down to the wire as Frances Bradley was matched up with the last gift, a flat rectangle the size of a handkerchief box (common in the pre Kimberly-Clark era). Inside, on green construction paper, were the words, "This card entitles the bearer to one deluxe bathroom decorative fixture complete on stand. Congratulations!" And with that, Laura bounded a-cross the room and relinquished the Darwin legacy. Frances was transfixed. A look of consternation flashed across her face with the realization that next year, her camouflaging ingenuity would be put to the test. (Maybe pulverization and tamping in a ring box?) The Stibbard Family had donated tickets to the Capilano Suspension Bridge amd Hugh Johnston selected the lucky numbers, the winners receiving pairs of return air tickets - North Vancouver to West Vancouver. There was a splendid array of food presided over by Barbara Johnson and her helpers as well as extra food donated especially for the Santa Claus Fund. An ever-congenial Eric Lash-brook dispensed wine at the bar; Della Charters tinkled the piano keys - Gerry Leader, louder. There was singing, conversation and a very accommodating school custodian who'd had the party sprung on him just hours before it was to begin. Our last party of the eighties, launched the festive season with a smile. After the Christmas Party, someone left behind a package of Laureen Jones' hasti-cards and a dear little souvenir purse. To claim, the owner should get in touch with the Society by calling 926-2643. HERITAGE DESIGNATION After over two hours of toughing through the public question period, a public hearing on a zoning bylaw, adoption of minutes, other business and six bylaw hearings at the December 18th West Vancouver Council Meeting, several of our members were rewarded to hear Council unanimously and enthusiastically introduce and pass Bylaw No. 3563 to designate the Gertrude Lawson House a municipal heritage building. Along with Architect Mike Barnes, those in attendance were President Jack Leyland, Hugh Johnston, Mary Chapman, Jim MacCarthy, Dave and Laura Coles and David and Georgia Wilson.
