The Society acknowledges with great pleasure the acquisition of the record book of the I.O.D.E., Duncan Lawson Chapter. The book was handed in by Mrs. Audrey Evans acting on instructions from the Provinicial Chapter of B.C. The following is a composite of two of the beautifully illuminated pages, the artistry of a Mr. Woodford. Space did not permit reproduction of the text in its original hand lettering. During the period of the First World War, a group of West Vancouver ladies were deeply interested in working for the Red Cross. On April 22 1920, at a meeting in the old Ambleside Hall, it was decided to form an I.O.D.E. Chapter. Influenced in their choice of organizations by the scope of Community and Educational work which they would be able to undertake, a Committee was formed consisting of the following ladies, Mrs. Myra A.Almas, Mrs. E. M. Field, Mrs. A. Edgley, Mrs. Peter Wait, Mrs. H. Jack-son, Miss Mary Mutchmore, Miss Gertrude Lawson, Mrs. F. Cromar Bruce, Mrs. J. Lawson, Mrs. Ella Teare. Tire committee decided that a Charter should be applied for under the title of Duncan Law-son, honouring the name of the beloved son and brother of two of the members present. An application was made to the National Chapter I.O.D.E. under that nomination, and a Charter was granted on May 13th 1920, with the committee personnel as charter members. Tae motto chosen by the new Chapter, "Loyal Service", has been carried out in many ways, to benefit returned men from both v/ars, as well as Women and Children, Schools and Memorials. The Chapter was under the jurisdiction of the Provincial Chapter of B.C. and the first Regent was Mrs. M. A. Almas, with Mrs. J. Lawson, Vice Regent. The Chapter contributed generously to the many and varied projects of the National and Provincial Chapters, took a keen interest in local education, and presented Book Prizes to pupils of Hollyburn School.
