Page 8 a design of muddy, pink seagulls spattered on a creamy background, passable when sunbathing; perfectly awful when wet. 1 looked like a walking jacquard towel. Although the bathing suits weren't always all that great - life at the beach was. We brown bagged it with cucumber sandwiches and apples and when the Hazelwood Ice Cream truck arrived at Bossenberry's Boat Rental & Concession to top up supplies, there'd be a mad scramble out of the water and up the beach to jostle for a place in line and a chip of ice from the bins at the rear of the truck. We stayed for the waves from the Princess Elaine and then we'd gather up our towels and jamming our damp suits into our bathing caps, we'd head for home cutting through John Lawson's orchard on our way. Like pressing a tongue a-gainst a touchy tooth to see if it still hurts, I never stopped glancing about for the emerald trunks and though the feeling faded with time, I never quite lost the fear that one day I might find them.
