PRESIDENT'S REPORT 1988 1988 was a very busy and successful year for our Society. Of particular significance is the progress we have made in preserving and cataloguing our backlog of archival material. With the backing of a $5,000.00 grant from the B.C. Archives Council, we obtained the services of Laura Coles as Archivist Consultant. Laura's first task was to train a dozen of our members in the correct archival methodologies and procedures. By year end, these volunteers had processed about half of the backlog of unsorted archives and by the end of 1989, we should be completely caught up. We plan to publish a brochure outlining what is in our archives and our schedule of days and opening hours. Ferry Office - Primarily due to your letters to Council, this important landmark is being preserved. We considered the pros and cons of moving into this building, but found it was totally unsuitable for our use. The West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce will be the prime tenant. We have agreed to provide wall displays of historic nature. These will be changed regularly, but won't require manning. Public Relations - Throughout the year, we participated in a number of community events starting with Heritage Week in February at Park Royal. In May, at the request of Council, we represented the Municipality at Vancouver Harbour Ports Day with a pictoral history of our ferries at the Pacific Marine Training Institute in North Vancouver. We also had a booth on Community Day and a display at the Municipal Hall the week taxes were due. Being involved in these activities is a very important part of our responsibility to the citizens of West Vancouver. Most people enjoy a look at the past and by leaving a favourable impression, we are being recognized as a group that is doing something worthwhile for the community. Member Comnunications - During the year, we held five general meetings and a Christmas party - average attendance 75. These large turnouts are unique considering all the other interests most of us have (particularly on a wet evening). It must be the speakers? the memories? the food? or all three? History-onics - Thank you, Georgia! Long Term Outlook - There are 4 major archival collections in West Vancouver. All the material in these collections, including ours, is the property of the Municpality. 1. West Vancouver Museum and Historical Society 2. Rupert Harrison's 3. West Vancouver Library 4. District of West Vancouver (Municipal Records) Archives are used by the public, media, business and the municpality as a source of information. It therefore appears logical that the archives should eventually come under one roof. The Municipal Manager has shown recognition of this by requesting the Municipal Clerk and Chief Librarian to formulate a long term plan for the administration of Municipal Archives. Your President is an ad hoc contributor. Our membership is still growing and our finances are in the black. I wish to thank all those people who donated pictures, scrapbooks, historic papers, photo albums, etc. I also wish to express my sincere thanks to all of our members who have been part of helping our organization preserve some of West Vancouver's history for future generations.
