I7ILL THE CHAIRMAN OF THE CHRISTMAS PARTY COMMITTEE PLEASE STAND UP AND IDENTIFY HIMSELF/HERSELF? In my 1988 calendar from Hawaii, December 8th is down as being "Bodhi Day". I don't pretend to know what that means and my American College Dictionary is of absolutely no help as it blithely skips from "Boden See" (German for Lake of Constance) to "bodice" without a nod of acknowledgement in the direction of Bodhi. But, if Bodhi should, by some chance, mean "toss a lei on the lagoon to ward off glitches", well, we shoulda done it. Remember last year when the date of our party and that of Pauline Johnson's Christmas Pageant collided? We had to squeeze ourselves into the v;orkroom (cosy) instead of spreading out into the music room (commodious). I can tell you we didn't make that mistake again ... v;e just overlooked booking the music room for Dec. 8th! It didn't matter in the end (except for red faces, of course) thanks to a first time on the job custodian who came to our rescue and, in true Fezziwig good spirits, had the room whipped into shape by the time the first guests arrived. The incident does, however, emphasize the necessity for a Christmas Party CHAIRMAN. Come on, someone. After all, need I point out that it's only a once-a-year shot? BEWARE THE FIFIH OF ANY tONTH Is there something we should know about the 5th day of the month? When our Society sailed out into the harbour aboard the 'Hollyburn' that July 5 th day in '87, 23.8 mm of rain dumped on us. And v/hen Ambleside Landing’at the foot of 14th Street was officially opened at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 5th last, there were more umbrellas per square foot than bricks in the pavement. Peeking out from a swathe of camera-protecting plastic, our indomitable photographer stood primed to capture the exact moment when our President would unveil the commemorative plaque describing the history of the site. But V7hen Jack Ley land, v;ho had been standing somewhat sheltered in the entranceway of the ferry building, leaned out through the paneless v;indow to execute his duty, he flicked back the drape with the speed and skill of a yo-yo champion -too fast for the human shutter finger with which our photographer is equipped. To appease universal disappointment, our President has promised a-future 'photo opportunity'. Great, Jack. Name a date. Any date. Just make sure it's not the 5th.
