JAMES KNIGHT CHAPMAN - IN MEMORIAM Jim on the Memory Cruise July 5, 1987 by B.G. Holt & G. Wilson With the passing of Jim Chapman, all the members of the West Vancouver Museum and Historical Society have lost a good friend and the Society, itself, has lost a firm supporter. Jim was born on Jan 7, 1911, in Vancouver and first came to West Vancouver with his family as a summer vacationer in 1915. The Chapmans moved over permanently two years later. Jim’s interest in the Society stemmed from his long residency here. I remember fondly his reminiscences of the family home at 2557 Kings Avenue - such things as the bedroom in the attic he and his brothers shared, reached only up a ladder and through a hole in the ceiling - and the little 'house' at the back of the garden. Jim was a lifelong sports fisherman and his legacy of 'fish stories' is legendary. I remember, too, his pride in his mother, Emily Alice, known to everyone as 'Pop', and her role in such community activities as the Dundarave Regatta, started by Jim's father, Philip, and a few friends. When the Historical Society went public, Jim became a member of the first elected executive in January of 1982 serving with diligence as treasurer until March, 1985, and as a director for the following year. He rarely missed an executive or a general meeting, and always his smile and friedliness lightened the meeting. Sadly, the Chapman family lost two members. On the morning of July 16th, Jim passed away and poignantly, twelve hours later, without ever knowing that Jim had died, his older brother, Charles Phillip, followed him. Jim is survived by two sisters, Sybil Mahon and Diana Winckler, both members of the Society, and a brother, Metford. He is also survived by a daughter, Jennifer, and a son, Philip. This summer, Jim's only grandchild, Lisa, was born to Philip and his wife, Dyan, and Jim got to see her three times before he died. Needless to say, in keeping with his joie de vivre, he was absolutely thrilled. It was his affection for people - especially his family, that marked Jim's life. We're going to miss him. Last year, a copy of the 75th anniversary booklet was mailed to each home owner in West Vancouver. This was an exceptionally fine and well-received publication. Additional copies were ordered during printing and 250 of them have been made available to us. Anyone wishing to send this booklet to friends and relatives residing elsewhere in Canada, can pick up a copy in Room 4 at Pauline Johnson School. Our out-of-town members may also avail themselves of this opportunity but we ask that you please send $1.50 to cover postage and handling when you place your order.
