If memory serves me correctly, it opened in 1923 with 2 classrooms of Grade 10 made up of approx. 15 pupils who had taken their Grade 9 either in North Van High or in Vancouver. In 1924, (my first year) Grade 9 vjas added and Miss Gv;en Gillis added to the staff. Either 1924 or 1925 a commercial class was added. Entering High School you had the choice - reg. Grade 9 or commercial. Tom Alsbury, later Mayor of Vancouver was the commercial teacher and the High School then had 4 rooms. On the corner of 13th and Esquimalt, there was an annex which became the manual training room supervised by a Mr. Ball. Our 1924 class was the first to complete the full Jr. Matric course graduating in 1927. Re 1924 High School years. Frank and Helen Colpitts' father was the very popular school custodian. Further to the 'candy' article that appeared in our January nevjsletter, a recent visit with Jacquie (Zemel) Dunster in Stockton, California, brought forth one more over-looked penny candy, no doubt recalled because of the Hallovje'en celebrations. Hovj many of you remember those vjaxy false teeth that never fitted a human mouth? After the first few frustrating minutes of trying, one gave up on it and chewed the 'denture' into an indescribably bland vjad of \;ax. IMPORTANT N OTICE For some time now we have been seeking a volunteer to co-ordinate the staffing of our various displays and we are very pleased to tell you that Joy Leader has accepted this position. Manning displays is one job our members really enjoy -it's fun and rewarding - so pair up v;ith a friend and give it a try. All that's involved is a couple of hours of your time spent chatting with the public about the display and V/est Vancouver History, V7hile putting in a good word for our Society.
