AMBLESIDE FERRY BOOKING HALL AND OFFICES (The Original Name) West Vancouver Council has officially declared the ferry office a heritage building and plans are underway to restore it to its original configuration. Reconstruction will include the upgrading of amenities and services e.g. concrete foundation, re-wiring and plumbing, electric heat, insulation and double glazing. The upper floor will be for offices and work area. The main floor will be one room to be used for display purposes. Aid. Pat Boname and Municipal Manager Terry Lester have been appointed as a committee to receive and consider applications for use of the building. As we understand it, the intent is to have a prime tenant who will use the upper floor exclusively and will share the main floor (for displays) with other interested groups i.e., a time schedule for each organization to be negotiated with the Municipality. Our Ferry Office Committee and Executive have held a number of meetings to discuss the alternatives. We considered the feasibility of moving our entire operation from Pauline Johnson School to the Ferry Office. Unfortunately, the building is not suitable for use as our main centre of operation. Of a number of problems identified, three influenced our decision. The area on the upper floor is too small for our use as a work room and, being of frame construction, the building does not meet the minimum fire safety standards recommended for the storage of archives. We are also concerned that the steep stairs could be a problem for many of our members. In view of these problems, it is the recommendation of your directors that we participate by providing historic displays on appropriate occasions throughout the year. We have offered to organize and participate in the Official Opening. We've also agreed to provide a number of glass enclosed wall panels to be used for the continuous display of historic pictures. If you have any questions regarding this matter, we will be discussing it at our May 26th General Meeting. If you have any information as to what organizations in the past have used the building's upstairs committee room, please let us know. Among those we are aware of are the West Vancouver Barbarian Rugby Club, the Great War Veterans Association (Canadian Legion), the Freemasons and St. Anthony's Church. There must have been others. OMNIUM GATHERUM* *'<n. a miscellaneous collection (f. Latin omnium meaning "all of" and gatherum meaning "a gathering", pseudo-Latin, derivative of gather) Omnium-Gatherum is an on going department of the newsletter providing a means by which members can express their ideas; ask questions; submit suggestions and voice opinions. We can be reached at Pauline Johnson School by phoning 926-2643 (if there is no one there you can leave a message), or by mail or, if convenient, use our mail drop box outside Room 4 at Pauline Johnson School during school hours. Mr. Stan Hardy corrects us on our reference to "Mr. Morton, publisher of the North Shore News" in the first instalment of "A Building as the Heart of a Region" and informs us that it was a Mr. Morden. Mr. Hardy could have taken one step further because of the reference to the North Shore NEl-ZS which should have been the North Shore PRESS. We got it right in the second instalment.
