Kaslo's spunky Mayor Jack Morris, never one to miss an opportunity to go to bat for the S.S. Moyie and the Kootenay Lake Historical Society, turned the tables on a recent Vancouver-based appeal, as reported by Carol Yolkart in the February 2nd issue of The Vancouver Sun under the heading: CASH-SHORT KASLO AMUS^ AT ORPHEUM FUND REQUEST 1 ••Still $155,000. short in a bid to save their own historic site, the residents of the village of Kaslo were amused by a recent request for a contribution of $1,000 toward Vancouver's Orpheum Theatre. •We'd be glad to help them out if their community would help us out,' said Jack Morris, mayor of the Helson-area village, population 890. Fair being fair he detemined that a $1,000 contribution would work out to $1.17 per person in his little town, A matching per capita contribution from the 1:31,000 residents of Vancouver would do magnificent things for Kaslo's efforts to save the historic S.S. Moyie, the last sternwheeler to ply the waters of Kootenay Lake, Drydocked in Kaslo in 1957, the boat has been maintained as a museum since that time, but is badly in need of major repairs, 'The village of Kaslo would be pleased to consider a donation to the Orpheum Theatre if the city of Vancouver will consider a per capita grant in the same amount to our own S.S. Moyie Preservation Fund,* Morris wrote Vancouver Mayor Gordon Campbell. Morris said in an interview that after years of am-twisting, the federal government promised to contribute $175,000 if the village would come up with a matching amount - a staggering sum to a small settl^ent in the Kootenay. So far, they've raised $20,000 - 'it comes in in $5s and $10s from individuals,' says Morris - but the required amount is a long way in the distance," If any of our readers would care to throw the S.S. Moyie a life line by way of a donation. Fund Raising Committee Chaiman, Isabel Butler, is in charge of cheques. * * -{f « CORPORATE MEMBERS We are always pleased to have the opportunity to acknowledge the support of our corporate monbers whose names follow in order of joining: Chapman, Chapman & Martin, Land Surveyors; Loach Hobbs & Kyler, Land Surveyors; The Corporation of the District of West Vancouver; Hollybum Funeral Hcxne; Peppi's Restaurant Ltd.; West Van Florist Ltd.; Ferguson Transport Ltd.; Wetmore Motors Ltd.; Stong's Markets Ltd.; Murchies Tea & Coffee Ltd.; Big-0-Tires, Dundarave; R.C.
